Joseph Garwood Obituary

Joseph R. Garwood, 65, of Blandon, passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by family, on Sunday, May 22, 2016.

He was the loving husband of Patricia A. (McManus) Garwood. Born in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, on October 7, 1950, Joe was the oldest son of the late Joseph R. and Bertha (Weber) Garwood.

He was a 1968 graduate of Springfield High School in Springfield, Pa.

Joe was creative and talented cartoonist, artist, author and historian. He was a live radio broadcast enthusiast who documented more than 50 years of breaking news, popular music and television programs through analog, digital and video mediums. He was also a distinct voice on local Philadelphia radio stations during the early 1980s.

Joe had an encyclopedic knowledge of classic cars, particularly the Volkswagen Beetle. He researched, authored and illustrated the automotive manual, "Volkswagen Beetle: The Car of the Century," a set of two highly sought after references books which provides make and model restoration details for every VW Bug from (1930-1980).

Joe was last employed with Duron Paints and Wallcoverings as a store manager. Prior to that, he was employed with Dick Horrigan's Volkswagen and BMW.

In addition to his wife, Patricia, Joe is survived by his children: Rita E. Garwood and her husband, Julian Rutledge, of Phoenixville; Grace A. Garwood, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Rachel M. Garwood and her fiancé, Kevin B. Meyer, of Fleetwood; Michael J. Garwood and Polly M. Garwood, of Blandon; a granddaughter, Violet; eight siblings: Richard Garwood and his wife, Rebekah, of Ohio; Gregory Garwood, of Wyomissing; Hillary "Holly" Garwood, of Wyomissing; Trayce Duran and her husband, Carmon, of Phoenixville; Paul Garwood and his wife, Marcella, of New Jersey; Patricia Garwood, of Fort Washington; Ann Daly and her husband, Edward, of Ambler; and Bertha Garwood, of Fort Washington; nieces, nephews and extended family.

Services for Joe are Friday, May 27, 2016, at 11 a.m. in Auman's, Inc., Funeral Home, 390 W. Neversink Rd., Reading, PA 19606. Burial will be in Aulenbach's Cemetery, Reading.

I just saw this today on 11/10/16. Wow!
Joe was a wonderful man. He was probably one of the most knowledgeable VW beetle Guru's on the planet. He never forgot anything and had an amazing mind. Pat, I am sorry for your loss. Joe will always be remembered for his big heart and kind spirit. My uncle owned Ciliberti Motors VW before it was Dick Horrigan VW and I went to Joe many times for advice on my split window beetle car. May the good Lord give you and your family peace.
