Born June 19, 1953, in Chicago, he was a son of Joseph and Frances Wiley, Chicago.
After high school, he saw combat in Vietnam as an Army Ranger, then served as a Ranger instructor in Fort Benning, Ga., until a drunken driver inflicted injuries that required years of surgery and rehabilitation.
To pursue his new goal of a career in medicine, Joe earned a bachelor's degree from Drake University, his medical degree from Johns Hopkins, and trained in pediatrics at St. Christopher's Hospital in Philadelphia.
“Dr. Joe” devoted his life to caring for underinsured and uninsured children, with a special interest in those subjected to abuse and neglect. During his 20-year career his affiliations included Reading Hospital and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
In March of 2008 he joined the Pediatric Hospitalist service at Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky, Ohio.
Joe will be remembered for his lifetime of service, unique sense of humor, unbounded generosity and unbreakable spirit.
A devoted father and beloved son and brother, he will forever be sadly missed by his sons, Joseph Zachary and Samuel Byron, and by his parents, five sisters, two brothers and his many dear friends.
For information on plans to memorialize his life, contact Lucy Cairns of Wyomissing. The Cremation Society of Illinois was in charge of arrangements.

I remember Dr.Joseph Wiley when I was a child at Saint Christopher´s Hospital for Children awaiting my liver transplant in which I received in 1999 at four years of age! I would see Dr. Wiley on going after my Liver Transplant Surgery at the Reading Hospital, He was tremendously loyal and a kind soul, the sweetest human being I will ever know in this life! He treated me with love, respect and care as if I was his own family and that is a blessed feeling I never had again! Thank you so much for your generosity and heart warming gift! Never Forgotten!

After the tragic car accident, Joe came to visit me in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in '75. His body was broken, but his inner strength and fighting spirit were exceptionally strong. Joe and I were friends living a few blocks from each other during the '60s and early '70s. We partied together, went to the '71 prom together with our dates, and had many great times in Hyde Park. He was a kind and brilliant man. May his soul rest forever in peace. I will see him again on the other side.

I went to elementary and high school with Joe. When we were young, I was fascinated by his Japanese heritage - my only experience being my love of the opera Madame Butterfly and Kabuki music. He shared stories and fun, but also told me about Samarai.
Many people don't know that Joe designed our high school mascot. Always looking to serve, we have lost a dear friend.
