IN MEMORY OF MY COUSIN,
JOYCE BRIGHTBILL FLAIL
-Eleanor (Stunz) Leinbach Kurtz
Thursday, March 5, 2021
Joyce’s Mother and my Mother were sisters. There was a total of eight siblings in the Suchomelly Family. Mary and Katherine, better known as Katie. There was one more sister, Anna. And five boys.
I was the first grandchild born into this family. So I have a recollection of the 17 who followed me. My name is Eleanor. I recently moved to a Senior Retirement Home in Colorado Springs which explanins my absence today.
.I think almost all of my cousins lived in or near The Farm, at one time or another, The Farm was owned by our Grandfather, John Suchomelly. Here at the Farm is where I have my first recollection of Joyce, first child of Mary and Ray Brightbill. She was just a toddler so we did not have much in common at this point since I was already all of eight years old.
Several years later we lived on another farm in the little community of Jacksonwald. Joyce and her two brothers and I and my brother grew up in the same neighborhood which was a super childhood environment: lots of fresh air and space wih trees and a creek nearby. And farm animals too.
Sometime in her early teens is when I became aware—in my mind, anyway, of Joyce’s strong resemblance to Elizabeth Taylor, a famous child star. I really enjoyed visiting at their home. Here is where I first saw people put ketchup on scrambled eggs!
One summer we kids followed Joyce’s dad down to the meadow to a spot in the winding creek with promise of being a good place for a dam to create a deeper spot so we could cool off in the summer heat. We kids all had our bathing suits on. And we all helped clean out the weeds and underbrush . It was an excellent spot. We enjoyed this special spot that we helped create. The next day I really did not enjoy some of the after results. The underbrush was loaded wih poison ivy. I don’t know how many others suffered the same fate. That kind of ended out wonderful natural swimming hole. I don’t even know if Joyce also got poison Ivy since we were all kind of house bound for a few days! It was terrific of Uncle Ray to take a bunch of kids on a fun excursion for the day. Apparently no one recognized the nice shiny leaves, including Uncle Ray!
In our adult years the Girl Cousins Joyce, Beverly, Marlene, Dolores, and myself got together for dinner and a night of reminiscing about our earlier years at least once a month. We had discussions of trying to enlarge our circle to include the Guy Cousins and spouses, Somehow that part never materialized. Too bad because we surely had a good time together!
Joyce----we love you. And you will be a happy memory in our minds and hearts forever!
Cousin Eleanor
