Laura Kauffman Obituary

Laura Alice (Kriner) Kauffman, aged 102, passed away in the morning of March 10th, 2012, in Reading, Pennsylvania. "Lolly," as she was affectionately called by friends and family, was a lifelong resident of Orwigsburg, PA, Schuylkill County, until recent ailments moved her closer to family. She was born on September 15th, 1909, the only child of Irvin and Ida (Krater) Kriner of Orwigsburg.

A graduate of Kutztown Normal School, now Kutztown University, she spent many years as a teacher in school districts throughout Pennsylvania. Her teaching career took her from Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County, to a one-room schoolhouse in Landingville, PA; she finished her career as a 6th grade teacher in the Blue Mountain Middle School in her hometown.

In addition to her lengthy employment, Laura spent over 50 years of marriage with her loving husband, Leroy Gerhart Kauffman, whom she met while working as a soda jerk in their hometown. Together, they enjoyed attending horse shows, going out on Saturday nights, and spending time with their daughter, Elaine. Laura was also an active participant in many activities and organizations. She was a lifelong member of St. John's U.C.C. in Orwigsburg, where she belonged to both the Women's Guild and the St. John's Quilters; and a member of the Orwigsburg Lionettes. Additionally, she was a member of the B.P.W. Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution-Mahangtongo Chapter, and a former member of the Schuylkill County Retired Teachers' Association.

Tragically, Laura was predeceased by her husband, Leroy, in 1989.

She is survived by her daughter, Elaine, and her husband, Albert Wynosky; grandson, Michael Wynosky, husband of Dr. Deborah Bren; granddaughter, Laura Adam; granddaughter, Lynn Smith; granddaughter, Elizabeth, wife of Scott Kaufmann; 9 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.

A remembrance of Laura's life service will be held at St. John's United Church of Christ, Orwigsburg, PA, at 1:30 PM, Saturday, March 17th, 2012.

Please honor Laura's request and send contributions, in lieu of flowers, in her name to St. John's United Church of Christ, 236 East Market Street, Orwigsburg, PA 17961, or Orwigsburg Public Library, East Independence Street, Orwigsburg, PA.
