Lillian Walter Obituary

Lillian S. Walter, 100, a resident of the Highlands at Wyomissing, formerly of Blandon and Fleetwood, died early Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, in Reading Hospital.

Born in Fleetwood, she was a daughter of the late Alfred and Elda (Schaeffer) Schlegel.

Mrs. Walter was a graduate of Fleetwood High School and the former Kutztown State Teachers College. She received a master's degree at Columbia University in New York City.

She was a first grade and later a kindergarten teacher for many years in the Fleetwood schools.

In 1955, Lillian was married to William E. Walter, who died in 1975. The Walters were trailer enthusiasts and traveled after their marriage for 14 months in the U.S. and Canada. They were both avid photographers and she continued this hobby throughout her life.

Mrs. Walter was a charter member of the Women's Club of Fleetwood and was its first secretary. She was also an active member of the Reading – Berks Guild of Craftsmen and the Berks Camera Club.

Lillian was instrumental in the organization of the Fleetwood Area Historical Society and was generous in donations of items there. In the past, she was very active with the Berks County Historical Society, Reading Symphony Orchestra and the Historic Preservation Trust of Berks County.

She is survived by sisters, Mary Jane Schofer, widow of Jacob Schofer, the Highlands; and Barbara, wife of Dr. Kenneth W. Miller, also of the Highlands.

Also surviving are a stepson, William Walter Jr., of the Highlands; three nephews and five nieces.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Frederick Schlegel; sisters, Julia Clemons and Emma Webb; and a niece.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Feb. 12, at 11 a.m. at Atonement Lutheran Church, 5 Wyomissing Blvd., Wyomissing. A visitation with family will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of services in the church. Officiating will be the Rev. Richard Summy.

Contributions may be made to the Highlands Endowment Fund, 2000 Cambridge Ave., Wyomissing, PA 19610, or The Fleetwood Area Historical Society, 110 W. Arch St., Fleetwood, PA 19522. The Mae A. Stump Funeral Home Inc., Fleetwood, is in charge of arrangements.

I enjoyed getting to know "Auntie Lil" on her visits to her niece, Marta, in Indianapolis. It was fun hearing of their adventures to NYC, Washington and other Eastern Shore trips.

It was with sadness that I learned of Lillian's death. What a special person she was! She was a model kindergarten teacher who was loved by all her students and parents alike. When I first began teaching at Fleetwood Elementary many years ago, she was a mentor ready to help me .... ready to share her words of wisdom ....and her years of experience. For this, I was so very greatful. When she retired from teaching, she gave me many of her personal teaching materials... some of which I still use in my Kdg. classroom today. As I use these things, it is with fondness that I remember her and my years at Fleetwood Elementary. But most importantly, she was a friend both inside and outside of school. We shared many laughs and stories as we sat around her kitchen table eating dessert or reminiscing about the trips she, Phyllis, and I took to Williamsburg, PA's Grand Canyon, and a host of other places. We loved to travel and to see the world. Somewhere during the course of our friendship she acquired the nickname "Shorty" ...because she was the ONLY person who was shorter than me! Over the years, that name just seemed to stick. So Shorty, thank you for all that you taught me, for your friendship, and for the special times we shared. We thank you for the special ways you have touched and enriched our lives. May you rest in peace and know that you will forever be in our hearts.

To the family, please accept my sincere sympathy and may you find comfort in the memories of the special times that you shared with her.

I loved my kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Walters! I was in the first kindergarten class, which met at the church on Washington until the "new" elementary school on Vine St. was finished. God has blessed her and all who knew her. Such a gracious and lovely lady.

Mrs. Walters was my first grade teacher and later my daughters kindergarten teacher. She was a most beautiful person who saw good in everyone she taught.

Lillian was so enthusiastic and appreciative of those around her. She was a role model for living life fully and graciously. She will be missed by her friends at Kutztown University many in all corners of Berks County.
