Mae Witman Obituary


Mae D. "Mae Ma" Witman entered into rest on Nov. 21, 2009, at Fairmount Homes, with her family by her side.

Her husband of 70 years, Roger H. Witman, passed away on Nov. 13, 2005.

Mae was born June 8, 1918, and raised in Ephrata, the daughter of Earl Ream Root and Mary Haller Root. Mae was a member of Faith United Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was a charter member of the Denver Women's Club and a Girl Scout leader.

She was employed for many years as a fashion coordinator and buyer for Donecker's of Ephrata. She loved her many buying trips to New York City.

She enjoyed traveling, dancing, power boating and sailing, hiking and going out with dear friends, "The Wednesday Lunch Bunch." She also enjoyed going to dinner at the American Legion in Ephrata and seeing many old friends. Surviving are her children: Gary, husband of Maryanne Witman, Denver, Brenda, wife of Brig. Gen. Donald Smith, Lancaster, and Barbara Witman Fichthorn, Denver; grandchildren: G. Dean Witman, Oshkosh, Wis., Lori Witman Heck, East Earl, Gini Witman Landis, Denver, Amy Witman Powers, Oakdale, Long Island. N.Y., Col. Anthony Smith, USAF, Spotsylvania, Va.; Tracy Smith Beyl, Mountville, and Ashley Fichthorn, Denver; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Mae is also survived by a sister, Rose Marie, wife of Dr. Loy Awkerman, Lebanon.

She was predeceased by her two sisters, Betty Brinley and Pearl Eaby.

Funeral services will take place on Friday, Nov. 27, at 10 a.m. at the Roseboro Funeral Home, 533 Walnut St., Denver, with the Rev. William Cluley officiating. Friends may greet the family at a viewing from 9 to 10 a.m.

Internment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Adamstown.
