On June 27, 2023, the remarkable life of Margaret (Peg) Thuss Miller Walter came to an end at the age of 103. Born Margarethe Alise Thuss on January 30, 1920, in Sebnitz, Germany, she was the daughter of Walter Alban Thuss and Emma Johanna Frenzel Thuss. She came to the USA with her family in 1928 at age eight, living first in Philadelphia, and then in the Reading area. She was the widow of John Herman (Keimie) Miller who died in 1971, and most recently, the widow of William E. Walter who passed away in 2015. She was predeceased by a brother, Walter Paul Thuss of Mohnton, PA, and one granddaughter, Abigail Lynn Miller Zappel. Peg learned English in her elementary classrooms while maintaining fluency in German which she enjoyed utilizing throughout her life. She graduated from Shillington High School, class of 1938, and first worked for Firestone in Philadelphia. She was an accomplished ballet dancer in her youth, and a talented painter throughout most of her life. She was also a gifted singer, serving many years as a soprano in the Bausman Church Choir and The Herman Miller Singers, both under the direction of her first husband. During the 1950's she owned and operated a women's clothing store, The Lamp Post Shop, in Shillington, PA, and was long known for her youthful appearance and fashionable style. Peg and second husband Bill loved traveling the world, establishing friendships far and near. In 1995 she was able to return to her hometown of Sebnitz, Germany where she re-established relationships with relatives there. Peg also loved entertaining family and friends locally, and at homes in
Ocean City, New Jersey, and in
Sarasota, Florida. Peg was a longtime member of the Reading Liederkranz, the YR Club of Wyomissing, and a faithful supporter of the Reading Symphony. She was a former member at Bausman Memorial UCC, Wyomissing, and later a member at Calvary UCC, Reading. Since 2006 Peg was a resident at The Highlands at Wyomissing, where the staff enjoyed her sparky sense of humor. Her family is very grateful for the skilled Highlands nursing staff that provided her with such compassionate care during her last years. Peg is survived by two children, daughter Kirsten Miller Gould and husband David (
La Quinta, CA) and son John Jeffrey Miller (Tafton, PA) as well as seven grandchildren: Vanessa Gould, Kristina Gould Duncan, Mackenzie Miller, Tess Miller, Garrett Miller, Kali Miller, and Marley Miller, and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two adored nephews and their wives, Randolph and Diane Thuss (Denver, PA) and Paul and Madge Thuss (
