Robert Hurlbrink Obituary

Robert W. Hurlbrink III, 95, formerly of Sinking Spring, passed away surrounded by family on Sunday, March 19, 2023, at Complete Care Berkshire. He is survived by Margaret Ann (Ruppenthal) Hurlbrink, Wyomissing, PA, his loving wife of 68 years. Memories of Bob are treasured by Ann and their children: Robert W. Hurlbrink IV of Woodbridge, VA, David R. (Janet) Hurlbrink of Birdsboro, PA and Laura L. Hook of Shillington, PA. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister Elaine (Hurlbrink) Reber, brother H. Richard Hurlbrink, and grandson Jeremy Hook. Born in Philadelphia to the late Robert W. Hurlbrink Jr. and Ruby (Husselton) Hurlbrink, Bob graduated from West Chester High School and enlisted in the United States Navy. Following his military service, he enrolled at The University of Maryland and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Agriculture and a Bachelor of Science and a Master's degree from the College of Engineering and Aeronautical Sciences. He embarked on a 30 year career with Bell Laboratories, retiring in 1989 as leader of the Integrated Circuit Package Design Group. He made significant contributions in the area of IC packaging and design and was selected as a recipient of the Bell Laboratories Distinguished Technical Staff Award for designing and putting into manufacture the first Bell System IC dual-inline package. Bob was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Reading, PA, serving as First and Second Reader, Usher, Maintenance Committee Director and any other role needed. He also served with pride and love on the Board of Directors of Tenacre Foundation, a Christian Science nursing ministry in Princeton, NJ. His strong faith greatly informed how he lived his life and how he treated everyone he met. His greatest joys came from spending time with family, reading, supporting those he loved, anything to do with trains, listening to classical music and tinkering for hours in his well-equipped basement workshop. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bob's memory may be made to the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Reading at 438 Douglas Street, Wyomissing, PA 19610. Services will be private at the convenience of the family. The family expresses gratitude to Bob's caregivers at Country Meadows and Complete Care Berkshire. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc, is entrusted with arrangements. Condolences may be expressed at kuhnfuneralhomes.com.

Dear Laura and family,
My deepest sympathies to you all. Truly fond memories of a great childhood and the role both your parents played, I think of them often. You were lucky to have him for as long as you did.
