Born to the late Paul R. and Ruth N. (Weyandt) Weitzel, Ron graduated from Wyomissing High School in 1950, and Ursinus College in 1959. Serving in Germany during the Korean War, Ron was a proud Army veteran. He worked as a human resources consultant for 15 years for Gilbert Associates (now Parson Corp.), retiring in 1995. Previously he was employed by Polymer Corp., Penn Optical, and Mack Trucks, Inc. Ron was very proud of his 12-year tenure as Mayor of the Borough of Wyomissing from 1994 until 2005. Beginning in 1995 he oversaw a screening clinic to determine children’s needs for hospitalization. Acting as a “Shepherd,” he transported the mothers and children to and from the hospital. An active member of St. Thomas U.C.C., Reading, Ron served as former VP of the Consistory and sang with the choir since 1949. He coordinated St. Thomas’s ESL program and the Even Start Program assisting Spanish families assimilate to American culture. Ron and Shirley later joined St. John’s Reformed Church after St. Thomas’s closure. A dedicated family man, Ron treasured time spent with his children and grandchildren, and he was completely devoted to Shirley. My family went to St. Thomas U.C.C. with the Weitzels. Some of our fondest memories were the camping retreat weekends that St. Thomas used to have. We were out in nature and had a very fun time. I am sure that he is up in heaven with my parents reminiscing about all of our time together at St. Thomas.

I will always remember Ron for the warmth of his smile, the kindness in his heart, and the way he made people feel. He always looked for, and found, the goodness in people. He always made me feel welcome over the years and he was very generous with his love. I admired him greatly as a devoted father, family man, and community leader, living a life that reflected his values of commitment, integrity, and honesty. He will be missed, I will miss him, and I am so grateful for having known him for so long. Rest in peace Ronald.
