Eugene Chantler Obituary

Eugene Chantler Eugene "Gene" Chantler died at his home on January 3, 2016, in Loveland, CO, due to complications from lung disease. He was 78. Gene was born on October 23, 1937, in Eureka, CA, to his parents, Delbert and Alzora Chantler. He was raised in Lakeport, CA, and moved to San Francisco after graduating high school. He married and had two children while in California, then moved to Colorado in 1969. Shortly after arriving in Fort Collins with his family, Gene started a career with the Poudre Fire Authority, where he served for 27 years, retiring as Division Chief. During his tenure at PFA, he was a mentor to many firefighters, and had a passion for sharing his knowledge and expertise. During his professional career, he taught extensively throughout North America for the National Fire Academy, where he was a well-respected fire service instructor. Gene was loved for his cynical, sarcastic sense of humor. In his retirement, he enjoyed golfing, reading, traveling, and rooting for the Broncos. Gene is survived by his wife, Ann Chantler, of Fort Collins, CO; his previous wife, Phillis Chantler, of Fort Collins, CO; his son, Mark Chantler, and daughter-in-law, Lynn Chantler, of Colorado Springs, CO; his daughter, Connie Gettig, of Fort Collins, CO; his daughter, Heather Chantler, of Loveland, CO; his daughter, Holly Mitchell, of Fort Collins, CO; and eight grandchildren. A reception in honor of Gene will be held at CB & Potts at Collindale Golf Course, 1441 East Horsetooth Road in Fort Collins, on Thursday, January 7, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Gene Chantler Memorial Fund in care of Kibbey-Fishburn Funeral Home, 1102 N. Lincoln Ave., Loveland, CO 80537. Please share your memories by signing the guest book at www.legacy.com

I was shocked to learn of Gene's passing. We taught together on many NFA courses over the years. He was always a joy to work with and his infectious sense of humor was an inspiration to all. There were many enjoyable hours spent wit "Gene, Gene the dancin' machine at the Ott House and NFA. Farewell old friend, you made a difference....

Gene has been a good friend for many years. We worked on many model procedure guides for the NIMS Consortium. He was an inspiration to many and he will be really missed. We had some great times doing promotional interviews or working on documents. I'll never forget one time when we were in Casper, Wyoming and he lost his luggage. He outfitted himself at Walmart and he had a tie and shirt on the next day. He was a great guy.
