Michael Maughan Obituary

Michael Francis Maughan Michael Francis Maughan was born in Sligo, Ireland, January 29, 1931, and he died February 1, 2014, in Vacaville, California. He was the fifth of five sons. He immigrated to Ontario, Canada, and found work before sending for his future wife, Margaret "Maudie" Harrison of Glasgow, Scotland. While in Canada, Mike and Maudie were married in May of 1952 and had the first two of five sons, Michael in 1953 and Alfred in 1956. They then moved to California in pursuit of warmer winters. Mike found work with Pacific Gas & Electric Company in Oakland, California. He was an accomplished welder and examples of his welding were often used in PG&E welding classes. During their years in Oakland, Mike and Maudie had three more sons, Jerry in 1957, Philip in 1959 and Kevin in 1961. Eventually, the family settled in San Leandro where Mike worked two and three jobs to put his five sons through Saint Leander's Catholic School. Mike stayed with PG&E and ascended through the ranks to field foreman. He retired from PG&E in 1985 and he and Maudie moved to Lakeport, California, on the shores of Clearlake. He was a proud member of the Lakeport Elks Lodge where he made many great friends and loved to share his wee Irish jokes. If you were lucky, you might occasionally hear him sing a rendition of "Irish Eyes" as he did on December 20, 2013, the day he lost his beloved Maudie after a 33 day battle with lung cancer. After losing Maudie, he often said, "I don't know what to do without her." 43 days after Maudie's death, Mike suffered a massive heart attack and joined her in heaven. All who knew him agree, he died of a broken heart. Mike is survived by his five sons and their wives, Michael and Dawn of Seattle, Washington, Alfred and Wendy of Vacaville, California, Jerry and Sheryl of San Leandro, California, Philip and Jill of San Lorenzo, California, and Kevin and Candi of North Kingstown, Rhode Island. Mike and Maudie also had ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Mike's life will be held at the Lakeport Elks Lodge at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 29, 2014. I loved my Uncle Mike so very, very much. He was such a kind, warm, gentle and funny man. My favorite memory of him, was when he sang 'My Wild Irish Rose" to me at my cousins retirement party. I will miss him very much. May my cousins take heart, that he is in Heaven, taking care of their Mom!

Dear Maughan Family,
we loved having your dear parents as our kind & gentle neighbours just across from us...they were always very nice to us, and I remember one afternoon I went outside after playing my drums along to my Beatles records a bit, & Maudie asked me "who's over there drumming then?" when I told her it was me, she smiled real big & said "wow! GOOD Ringo!!" & I happily thanked her. that made me smile & it is one of the BEST compliments I have ever recieved about my playing, which I have shared with many friends since. we too will miss them terribly, it's not every day you get neighbours as nice as them!! god bless your family & friends at this difficult time. they were indeed great people. bless 'em!

Dear Maughan Family: You all know how much we loved your Father and Mother and we will miss them so much. They were more than our "lake" neighbors but they were our dear friends. We will remember all the fun times we shared with them over these last 18 years of knowing them. Our deepest sympathy to your family. Love, Judy and Jim

Dad: You are gone but never forgotten. You raised 5 sons to be respectful and hard working. By your example, we each chose different career paths at which we have succeeded. We strive to be good husbands and fathers and we are always proud to be your sons. Give mom a kiss for me. I miss you both every day! Jerry xx
