Robert P. "Bob" Horan Robert P. "Bob" Horan passed away on Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at the age of 89 in Nice, California. Bob was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on June 10, 1928, the son of Timothy J. Horan and Florence E. McBride, and was the youngest of nine children. He and his siblings were second generation immigrants from County Kerry, Ireland. On September 7, 1952, he married Eloise C. Schisler at the Cathedral of the Assumption in Baltimore, Maryland. Bob graduated from Cambridge High and Latin in 1944. In 1945 at the age of seventeen, Bob enlisted in the Army Specialized Training Program, with the permission of his parents, to proudly join his three older brothers who were in active military service at that time. After five months in the program he was accepted into the Counter Intelligence Corps. He was released by the Army in 1948 to attend college and graduated from Harvard University in 1951. Bob worked for the Department of the Army for 40 years, most of which were spent working as a civilian for Military Intelligence overseas. He served in Japan, Italy, Vietnam, Kansas City, Missouri and Germany. He also served in the Army Reserve while in Europe, teaching counter intelligence, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1988 after 27 years of service. During his years in Europe, Bob also spearheaded the formation of ski clubs at several military bases, organizing and leading ski trips for servicemen and their families to resorts throughout Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France and Norway. He also participated in basketball leagues as a referee. Generous and kind, he always opened his home to single military personnel, far away from their families, for meals during the holidays. Bob was extremely proud of his Irish heritage and was a consummate entertainer. He loved to attend parties or gather around a table with family and friends either at home or at a restaurant. He loved to tell jokes, and prided himself for being able to come up with a joke on any subject when asked. He read the dictionary "for fun" as a child, and was fluent in seven languages. He was a trained dancer and loved music, especially classical, big band and musicals, and owned hundreds of record albums at one time. He loved to perform and acted in, and directed, many plays and musicals during his lifetime. Bob was an avid reader of newspapers, clipping and saving interesting articles that he read, and enjoyed completing the crossword puzzle. He whistled frequently, and loved to get a laugh from his beloved granddaughters by making funny faces. He also loved Italian food and the Red Sox. Bob retired from the Civil Service while in Germany in 1992. He worked as a tour guide in Europe until he settled in Superior, Colorado, in 1994 where he was active in local politics, the Colorado Democratic Party and performed in plays at the Nomad Theatre and Colorado Shakespeare Festival in Boulder. In 2013 Bob's daughters moved him to Lake County, California, to care for him in his advancing years. Bob was predeceased by his son, Robert Shawn, in 1970, his wife, Eloise, in 1986, and his eight siblings. He is survived by his daughters, Paula Horan of Nepal, Patricia (Morton) Levine (stepchildren, Rachel, Abigail and Andrew) of Minden, NV, and Katherine Rupert of Kelseyville, CA; and granddaughters, Ravare Rupert and GenŠve Rupert of Los Angeles, CA. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and friends throughout the world. Short on advice, but long on en-couragement, Bob was a firm believer that you can accomplish any goal you set your mind to. Mass will be held for Bob on Monday, June 4, 2018, at 2 p.m. at Queen of Peace Church, 14435 Uhl Avenue, Clearlake, California. Friends of Bob and his family are invited to attend.
