Barry Cunningham Obituary

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - Barry L. Cunningham, 71, of Punta Gorda, Fla., and formerly of Meriden, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2007.
He was born Oct. 23, 1925, the son of Ruth Kaemmer Cunningham and William Henry Cunningham and was a graduate of Meriden High School and Hobart College. He worked at Boehle's Trucking Company for 35 years until his retirement in 1997. He was a member of several clubs in Florida, including the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Moose Club. "Huck" was known as one of Meriden's finest athletes, having lettered in three sports at Meriden High and as a basketball standout at Hobart College. He was well known throughout New England and other parts of the Northeast as one of the finest fast pitch softball pitchers of the time. He was a diehard Yankee fan and a devout UConn fan and often had the UConn flag flying at his residence.
He is survived by daughters, Lisa Ruth Cunningham of Punta Gorda, Fla., Debra Lynn Cunningham of Middletown and Karen Cunningham DesJardins of Bethlehem. He is also survived by grandchildren, Elise E. DesJardins of Bethlehem, Travis Cunningham of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Eric Cunningham of Bethlehem. He was predeceased by his sister, Gail Cunningham Bush, who was among the lights of his life.
"Huck" will be solely missed by those who knew him and laughed with him.
A memorial service will be held at the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden on Friday, March 16, at 10:30 a.m., followed by a get together of friends and family. To send a condolence please see obituary at www.beecherandbennett.com

My sisters and I will miss our beloved uncle Huck. We shared many wonderful times in Meriden and in Ohio during our childhood and will always cherish those memories. Huck was a wonderful man and he enriched our lives in so many ways. Rest in peace, you are loved always.

I have many fond memories of Huck as a teammate with the McConnell Larks fast pitch sofball team during the 60's.Many laughs & great times.
