Daniel Lyon Obituary

Peacefully at home on January 12th, Daniel Webster Lyon, local artist and architect, closed his eyes on 90 well-lived years. Dan attended local schools and graduated Yale University '55, where he rowed varsity crew and enrolled in ROTC. He served as a US Army Lieutenant - artillery division in Korea. Returning home, Dan explored several careers and then harnessed his artistic and drafting talents with his building experience into a notable career in local architecture - designing both residential and commercial - vineyards, equestrian centers, churches, homes, retail, medical, and his own studio until his retirement at 89. Affectionately dubbed "The Pencil King" by a colleague, Dan eschewed technology and computer-aided drafting. His pencil sketches, pen and ink renderings, holiday cards, free hand "doodleydoops" and hand-drawn architectural plans remain works of art, treasured by those who received, collected, or commissioned them. In addition to his family, he loved and faithfully served his community and church in a multitude of capacities. He loved sailing, making music, the YMCA, playing the harmonica, St Paul's choir, off-season trips to Quansoo, Martha's Vineyard, and a brandy by the fire at the end of the workday. Dan graced, and his memory will continue to grace, the lives of his wife, daughters, step-daughters, and grandchildren, as well as his extended family, professional associates, friends, and neighbors. He is predeceased by his former wife, and his son, brother, and sister. All will recall his easy laugh, his courtliness, his encouraging spirit, his steady habits, and his corny jokes. A Service of Thanksgiving for Dan's life will be held at St Paul's Church, 65 North Main Street, Wallingford, this Saturday, January 20, at 11am. All are welcome to a reception immediately following the service to pay respects and share stories. Handicapped access to the elevator is in the back of the church building. The B.C. Bailey Funeral Home of Wallingford, CT, has been entrusted with arrangements. To leave a message of remembrance please visit: www.BaileyCares.com

I´m sorry that I´m just reading about Dan´s passing but send condolences to all. He was loved by the Durkin family ...... laughed easy, listened kindly...... and made everyone feel welcomed always. Special prayers to Barb and Annie. ...... He steered my parents dreams of renovating an old home home in Cheshire .... And stayed friends until they both passed on. God bless and may memories make you smile.

Dan designed and helped build my furniture store, Strand Wayside Furniture, on South Broad Street in Wallingford in 1979. Every experience in my life with Dan Lyon was always delightful, fun, and sweet. I am so sorry that he has passed and I will miss all the times we would connect over the past few years.

I have fond memories of Dan, some of which include amusing situations involving our shared first name. A good man, indeed.

To the kind man I deeply admired and respected, but spent too few hours with; you shall be missed. Thank you for the lively chats and education on architecture, construction, and philosophy - and for always taking tender care of my sister.
