Frederick Herzman Obituary

Frederick A. Herzman, Jr., 74 of Cheshire, CT, entered into eternal rest on December 23rd after bravely battling a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Judith (Sargent) Herzman for almost 52 years.

Fred was born April 6th, 1946 to the late Frederick A. Herzman Sr. and Margaret (Shepp) Herzman of Half Mile Road, East Haven, CT. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Robert A. Herzman of North Haven, CT and Raymond G. Patterson of Shelbourne, MA.

Besides this wife, he is survived by his daughter Holly A Hermzan of Cheshire, who will miss him dearly and his son, William L. Herzman and his wife Maureen also of Cheshire, his grandchildren, Julia Ward and Morgan Herzman and Bobby Herzman; sisters-in-law, Linda H. Herzman of North Haven and Fleurette Patterson of Shelbourne, MA, niece Beth (Herzman) Welch of Wallingford and her husband Kevin as well as cousins and grand-nieces.

Fred graduated from East Haven High School and attended Eli Whitney Technical High School where he received his training to become an electrician. He owned his own business for over 35 years and was the electrical inspector for Cheshire for over 20 years until his retirement in 2018. Although an electrician by trade, his chosen path was that of a gentleman farmer. Many people in Cheshire knew him as "Farmer Fred" and he could often be seen in his cut-offs and farmer's hat tending to his produce or chatting it up with his neighbors at his stand. In addition, he could often be found snow plowing in the winter and in various fields around town in the summer baling hay with his big red tractor or his 1939 Farmall H that he proudly bought with his own money when he was only 9 years old. Another favorite hobby of his was spending time with his animals including the many horses and dalmatians he owned over the decades and cherished so much. In his final months, it was his wife who he spent the most time with, often listening to country music songs together.

Fred was an active leader in the Middlesex and New Haven County 4-H Fair Association, He tirelessly worked to help put on each year's fair for over 15 years in the 1980s and 90s. When he wasn't teaching the 4-H youth how to drive a tractor, he could be found building or fixing whatever needed to be done and helping to put on the association's horse show.
