Helen (Walka) Filipek, 100, wife of the late Winton S. Filipek, passed away on Friday, March 7, 2025, at The Bradley Home in Meriden. Born in Norwich on June 12, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Victoria and John Walka. Helen worked as a switchboard operator at International Silver Co., in retail at G. Fox & Co., as a realtor for over 20 years at The Homestore, and later became an integral part of "Twice is Nice" in Wallingford. She was a devoted parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church.
Helen loved playing cards and organized many "setback" tournaments for fun. She took great pride in watching her children participate in various sports and was an avid viewer of tennis, golf, and especially UConn women's basketball on television. A master knitter, Helen notably crocheted her daughter's wedding dress.
Helen is survived by her three daughters, Patricia (Patty) and her husband David Kirouac, Kathleen (Kathy) Scalzi, and Nancy Filipek; her two sons, Winton (Wint) and his wife Margaret Filipek, and David Filipek; her five grandchildren, Michael Filipek, Monika Lynn Filipek, Eric Parente, Paul Scalzi, and Ashley Kirouac and her husband Kevin Fitzgibbons; and her four great-grandchildren, Luke and Natalia Filipek, and Zachary and Benjamin Parente. She was predeceased by her grandson Brad Scalzi, her sister Anne Griener, her brother Tony Walka, and her son-in-law Francis P. (Biff) Scalzi.
Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Saturday, March 15, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, CT 06450. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
