Helen Kasperovich

1924 - 2021

Helen (Lucas) Kasperovich passed away on June 24, 2021 after a brief illness. Born on June 3, 1924 as the daughter of Helen and Michael Lucas she was raised in Trumbull, Connecticut. Helen attended local schools in Bridgeport and graduated in 1947 from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA, with a Bachelor's of Music degree with special honors in education. Upon graduation, Helen worked in the North Adams Mass school district in music education until her marriage to Leo Kasperovich in 1950 at which time she relocated to Meriden. She began a teaching career with the Meriden school system in music education. In 1972, she earned a Master's of Education degree from Central Connecticut State College. Helen was known to many Meriden students as she traveled to various elementary schools each day. Mrs. Kasperovich was active in Meriden civic life as she taught adult evening classes including "Exploring Opera". She also served as the president of the Rosa Ponselle Fund, and was honored by the US Postal Service for her contribution in developing a Rosa Ponselle commemorative stamp. She was also a member of the Meriden Women's club, Red Hat Society and the Alpha Chi Omega Fraternity (Zeta Chapter) of the New England Conservatory of Music. Extremely active in her religious life, Helen served as the choir director at SS Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Church in Meriden for 24 years. She retired from this position in 1999 at which time she was officially honored for her service by the Archbishop of Washington Metropolitan of all America and Canada. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Dr. Katharyn Knapp, her son-in-law William of Belpre, Ohio along with one very special friend, two nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo, her sister-in-law, one nephew, and many close friends.

Funeral arrangements will be provided by the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main Street, Meriden, CT. However, per Mrs. Kasperovich's wish, there will be no calling hours. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 30th at 11 a.m. at SS. Peter & Paul Orthodox Church, 54 Park Avenue, Meriden, CT, with Rev. Joshua Mosher officiating. Everyone is asked to meet directly at church. Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Meriden. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to SS.
