Joseph Weigand, Obituary

MERIDEN - Joseph F. Weigand, Jr., 80, passed peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016 with his family by his side. Joe was the beloved husband of Cynthia (Schiffer) Weigand for 44 years.

Joe was the son of the late Joseph F. Weigand and Josephine (Salenga) Weigand. He was a lifelong resident of Meriden, and graduated from Meriden High School in 1954. He received his bachelor's degree in science from UConn in 1958. He then went on to serve in the U.S. Navy from 1959-1962. Three years later he graduated from UConn Law School in 1965. Joe was a founding partner in the law firm of Weigand, Mahon and Adelman and was recently acknowledged by the CT Bar Association for continually practicing law for 50 years. Joe had a passionate dedication to help the many organizations he supported. He directed this energy to the Meriden YMCA, Jimmy Fund Foundation, and the St. Laurent Parish Council. Joe began his civic engagement when he became involved in local politics in the late 60's. He was elected in 1974 to the State of CT House of Representatives and also served for two years as the Clerk of the House. He later focused his interest to his alma mater. He was the President of the Alumni Board of Directors from 1988-1990.During this time he was excited to be involved in the building of the new alumni house. Joe was a perfect "Master of Ceremonies" for the many events during this time. Whether he was clamming, sailing, skiing, or enjoying fine dining with family and friends, he made the most out of each and every day. His "road trip " escapades were infamous and often led to new friends and interests. Joe especially enjoyed the comradery of playing golf.

Joe's love for his family encompassed his joy for living. He is survived by his three children, Elizabeth Scalesse and husband, Charles, Joseph C. Weigand, Christopher Weigand and his wife, Emily (Hernandez). Grampy Joe will be missed by his four grandchildren, Jack and Maizy Weigand and Charlie and Lilly Scalesse. He is also survived by his wonderful sister, Janice Shea and husband, William and their six children.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 10:30 a.m. from the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden and at 11 a.m. at St. Laurent Church for a Mass of Christian burial. Burial will be private. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday prior to the service from 9 to 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers donation in his memory may be made to the Jimmy Fund Foundation, P.O. Cindy and Family,
Our condolences to you on Joe's passing. I worked with Joe many, many years. First when he was a partner at Shea, Weigand and Cook on Pratt Street, then Weigand and Mahon at 300 Broad Street and then Weigand, Mahon and Adelman at 636 Broad Street. Peter and I enjoyed going to UCONN games with you and Joe. We are so sorry that he has passed away. Our best to you and your family.

Cindy, Joey, Chris, and Lizzie,
Joe was one of my favorite people in this world, and I have met so many! Warm, welcoming, generous, curious, funny, and ever so kind. We were all so lucky to know and love him.

I wish you strength, and hope that the steady stream of messages and remembrances helps salve the ache. God rest, uncle Joe. You were a good one. Love from the Norway Sheas

Dear Cindi and Family:
The passing of your dearest Joe has saddened my heart!
He was a friend, classmate, old golfing partner, and truly a good, honest, decent person.
When no one would step up to chair our 60th MHS class reunion Joe was there to take the job, and we ended up having our best reunion ever. Yes Joe, MHS Class of 1954 was "Simply the Best", and on behalf of all your classmates we salute you in Heaven with our motto, "Remember the Red and Blue"!
My deepest sympathy to Cindi and family, may Joseph F. Weigand`s soul rest in God`s eternal peace, he will be sorely missed!
Sincerely,
John& Millie Young,

Dear Cindi and family: I have such great memories of Joe when I was assistant registrar of voters back in the 70's, he was always a gentleman and I would periodically run into him at the grocery store and he always had a smile and a kind word...the halls of City Hall will miss him and his gentle smile...there are NO words to express how shocked I am to have read his obit. today.. Always, Jo-Ann Lunney-amantea
