Peter J. Martin

SOUTH CHATHAM, Mass. - Peter Joseph Martin, 79, of South Chatham, Mass., died on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at Liberty Commons Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center, Chatham, Mass., from Parkinson's disease.

Peter was born to Raymond Kenneth Martin and Anna Flynn Martin, of the Milldale section, of Southington. He married Mildred Julia Slater in 1959 and they resided in Milldale, until moving to South Chatham, Mass. in 2004.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and is a graduate of Cheshire Academy and The University of New Haven. He enjoyed a 35-year-long career in research at Yale University, as an engineer and business manager in the Department of High Energy Physics. Peter was committed to service and leadership in his community including election to the Southington Board of Education and 54 years of membership in the American Legion, Kiltonic Post No. 72.

Peter is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mildred S. Martin, of South Chatham, Mass.; his three children and their spouses, MaryAnn Martin and Gary Brad Grumbling, of Bloomington, Ind., Michael Peter Martin and Ka-ren Brown Martin, of North Reading, Mass., and Katherine Martin Schroeder, of Southington; eight grandchildren, Nicholas and Anna Schroeder and Timothy Angell, of Southington, Abigail and Meredith Martin, of North Reading, Mass., and Peter, Julia and Clare Grumbling, of Bloomington, Ind. He is predeceased by his sister, Marian Martin Kennedy, who died in 1995; and is also survived by three nieces and their families.
