Teresa Kristan Obituary

On the cloudy Wednesday of April 6th, 2022 at 4:45pm Teresa Marie Noel Kristan entered the ethereal great beyond. She shocked us all on Sunday when she suffered a profound stroke. Daughter Julia Kristan and son Nicholas Kaminski rushed to Connecticut to be with her and our father, her husband Edward Kaminski. We were showered with loving calls, texts and emails from her supportive family and friends. In honoring her years-long wishes to die with dignity we spent her last peaceful day on earth playing favorite songs with the four of us together. She then graciously or perhaps mischievously gave us the Irish goodbye and died when we left her bedside to get food. Teresa was a one-of-a kind woman, wry, witty and kind. She came from one of many as the 7th born of 9 children to Helen Chappo and Julius Kristan. The reunion on the other side must surely be a joyful one filled with baked goods, card playing and sky watching. She'll dance with Tommy, have coffee with Joan and smoke ciggies with Vir. We know she's looking forward to the next Oscars with Peg from the best seat in the house. As you're reading this you might want to cry, and that's okay. But as her daughter, I am certain she would be disappointed if you didn't also recall a hilarious memory or two. Teresa would be the first to have her shoulders shaking with laughter at a funeral. She'd be engaging in brilliant, acerbic dialogue on whatever subject was at hand. Then a smile and she'd ask about your family. Soup was made for many of you in the hard times. In her own family she thrived in her role as a loyal younger sibling always ready with puns and her "fine china" contribution for gatherings. She and her "smartest sister" would compete to finish the most challenging NY Times crosswords in ink. As a favorite aunt of 26 nieces and nephews, she would let the next generation talk earnestly and give the most astute, snarky advice. In her softest moments she was grandmother and great aunt, mellowed or maybe just tired from years of getting the best comeback with everyone else. She and Edward had lockers next to each other in middle school, and he can tell you that she was the best thing to happen to him; she might not be quoted as saying the same of him. Their 44 years of marriage were reflective of her stubborn, pragmatic and game approach to life. They were truly for better or worse, in sickness and in health. Ed will miss cooking for his best friend but not her weekly "food option." Together you would find them most happily at Archie's, visiting libraries, seeing Julia and grandson Elijah, along with their favorite bartenders in Philadelphia, MLB games with Nick or taking drives around to admire the autumnal leaves of New England. Evenings at their Wallingford home would find Teresa deep in a book with Ed napping on the other couch bathed in the magical glow of their unique artificial illumination. Most of you reading this will know her from her job of 42 years at the Wallingford Public Library. It was beyond a job. It was, and is, a family of dear friends who love books and love each other more. Being surrounded by the interesting minds of the patrons, coworkers, and authors of the ages gave her true joie de vivre. Her wit and wisdom are already missed in the lives of everyone she touched. Edward, Julia and Nicholas request in lieu of flowers that any generosity be in the form of donations to Master's Manna at 428 South Cherry Street, Wallingford, CT (203) 678-3042.

I happened by the Wallingford Library today, the first time since COVID, and heard the shocking and sad news about Teresa. I fondly recall her visits to my pediatric office with Julia and Nick-there was never a dull moment as she made me laugh with her remarkable droll sense of humor. I loved dropping by the library-she knew I was a Met fan and teased me about their performance; I will sorely miss seeing her there. My heartfelt condolences to Ed, Julia, Nick and the rest of the family.

Teresa was a piece of work. Her wit was unmatched! I cannot go by Archie Moore's without thinking of Teresa and Ed. So often they'd be at one of the outdoor tables "holding down the fort". Her passing was a shock to everyone but the memory of her smile and cheerfulness will last for a long time. I would say she was PRECIOUS - one of a kind. I'm so happy to see this posting as I was unable to reach any of the family right after her passing. This is a beautiful obituary - written by Julia, I believe. Julia, Ed and Nick, I send you my love!

I am aware how late this offer of sympathy is, but it is none-the-less sincere. I knew Teresa from the library, but she had a talent for making you feel that you were her good friend and that is so very special. We share stories about our lives which were sometimes happy and sometimes sad. She was a terrific human being and you all lost her way too soon. I am certain that here memories will give you the comfort you need over the years.

I just found out about Teresa’s passing when visiting the Wallingford Library today. We worked together at the Library for two years and she became one of my favorite people I worked with. She was always a big cheerleader for me which meant the world as a started my career as a librarian. I recently had a baby and it breaks my heart to know he will never get to meet her. I will miss really miss her.

I am so sad to learn of Teresa's passing. I knew her from the library and I enjoyed speaking with her about books and events at the library. She was the nicest person and I am very sorry for her family.

So sorry to hear of Teresa’s passing. As a patron of the Library, I often saw Teresa assist everyone who requested it! Her quick wit put all at ease as she guided us through the “book return” protocol when the BEYOND DUE DATE occurred! Which I am sure I wasn’t the only one who loves the smell of a GOOD Book!! Teresa, there is a special shelf saved just for you! RIP.... D/patron

I never got to know Teresa very well, having only met her a few times. However, Julia's words brought her to life for all of us who missed getting to know this wonderful woman. May the memories that Ed, Nicholas and Julia always keep her near. Also, to her lovely, welcoming family may she always bring a smile to your face.

We will remember Teresa as a gentle soul who added to the strength and joy of the library staff with her comfortable ways and warm smile. We have good memories of Teresa and Jean and others who have died recently, leaving Julie and Cindy and others to carry on with Jane's leadership for the good of Wallingford. Teresa often had a quip that got a chuckle while doing the library's business. She will be missed by many.

We knew the lovely and personable Teresa only as our favorite librarian, having moved to Wallingford about 3 years ago. We are saddened at her sudden passing and our hearts ache for those she left behind. Please except our sincere condolences. She WILL be remembered by those whose lives were brightened by being in her presence.

I went to Holy Trinity with
Teresa. What a warm wonderful memory I have of her. This beautiful tribute to her life is just inspiring. Tears came to my eyes reading her obituary and all the warm wonderful messages. She obviously knew her purpose here. May she Rest In Peace. My sincere condolences to her family and all who had the privilege of being in her life.

I would like to say that Teresa was a kind and thoughtful person. We shared a lot of life experiences and was always ready to lend a hand. I worked with Ed in the 1970s in Wallingford and that is how I came to know her.It was mainly a library friendship but also ran into her around town with Ed early on and sat together for a cocktail with them and my husband...Also knew her via brother Chris a talented musician. He and my exhusband shared music together. We both offer our condolences.Lee and Paul Aiken

My wife and I send our sympathy to the family. I knew Teresa obviously through my many, many visits to the library and she was such a pleasant person to chat with. We both had issues walking and often compared our situations. As soon as she saw my wife or myself come through the door she knew why we were there,
and knowing our card numbers she got our books for us. She always had a smile and a warm welcome. We will miss her.

I am so glad that I can call her a friend since high school. When we were talking one time about the joys/trials of child raising, she gave me the best line ever, she said they may be little princes and princess ,but, I am the still the Empress!! That was a term I stole and still use with my kids, grandkids and greatgrands. As with her smile and red hair and sparkling wit, she will continue to warm this side of the journey. She was one of the few people I know who knew how to enjoy and live life fully. With LOVE in her heart, a smile to share and a kind ear to listen to any and all who came her way. I pray that the Love she gave to all now envelopes, protect and comfort all your family, Cornelia Halligan Mislick.

I met Teresa in 1988 when I began a part time job at the Library. Teresa was so friendly, welcoming, and yes, witty! Over the years, well decades, I was at the WPL more often as a patron. The smile, wittiness and friendship was always present. I just saw her there a few weeks ago, smiling and laughing and that is how I will remember this special lady. Sending my condolences to all her loved ones, especially her wonderful family.

John and I are heartbroken. I first met Teresa as a fellow fencing widow, when our husbands were involved in fencing clubs and competitions. We had a blast traveling by train to Montreal and exploring the sights together. I often would stop and say hello when I saw Ed and Teresa outside Archie Moore’s on a nice summer evening. May your memory always be a blessing.

I am so saddened by this news. Teresa used to visit my booth at the Wallingford Garden Market. She always remembered my name and greeted me with a smile when I would stop in to the library. We’d chat about looking forward to the Garden Market season, especially when the pandemic began to ease. I will miss her smile and sweet personality at the WPL. My condolences to her family and friends.

I have an admiration and affection for Theresa going back to my Holy Trinity grammar school days when I would frequently visit the Kristan home on William Street. Invariably, Theresa would be curled up like a cat in a chair in her living room deeply engrossed in a book. I would relish the opportunity to break her trance with an enthusiastic "Hello, Therese!", and look forward to her begrudging acknowledgement of my interrupting presence with a wry smile. In later years, on occasion, I would enjoy her company and conversation with Ed at their home. How delightful to be in their presence. I always smile when I think about Theresa. She made a big impression on me many years ago, and has had a lasting, positive influence on me. God bless, Theresa, and her family.

What can I say? I am in complete shock. I didn’t know Teresa outside of the library, but she was always the best part of my visit. We bonded over our shared age and all the aches and pains that go with it, but we always shared a laugh about it. I will miss seeing there her so much.
My deepest condolences to all her family and friends and everyone who was lucky enough to be in her life.

My favorite cousin, in a tie with her brother Chris. I cannot believe she is gone, but I do believe she is giving them hell wherever she is. I loved your send-off, Julia! Where did you get that wit from, I wonder? I miss that laugh, that smile, that zinger she could deliver with greater accuracy than anyone else. Everyone who knew her is lucky.

With her humor, wit and knowing looks Teresa had the remarkable gift of making so many people feel like they were each a special friend. We have carried on a nearly 10 year conversation held in snippets every few days. He friendship was unlike any other and I will miss her dearly. I’m so grateful to have had her in my life.

I am deeply saddened to hear this news. Although Teresa and I hadn't been in touch for many years, there's no question that we would catch up and share many laughs if we crossed paths again.

As children, the backyard of the Kristan family home directly bordered the backyard my family's home on North Orchard Street. Every weekday, for years, Teresa would make the short journey thru her yard and mine to stop by in the early morning so we could walk to Holy Trinity School together. Teresa patiently waited in my kitchen while I scrambled to finish up last bits of homework (lol, never judging me, even though I was certain she finished her homework the night before :-)). Teresa was one of my first friends in life, a wonderful and engaging presence at my doorstep every morning, and truly someone I'll never forget. My deepest condolences to her entire family.

At a loss for words, but I never had a dull moment when Teresa was around. Always happy to see her and make her laugh at the WPL. I knew she was a special individual 30+ years ago, when I first met her. Now she serves as a Special Angel taken from us way too soon. You will be missed. My condolences to the family.

What a devastating and unexpected loss. As with so many in our community, we got to know Teresa from years of visiting the great Wallingford Public Library. Teresa and I went to HTS together (and have the scars to prove it!) We were in each other’s classes for all eight years and she was a great pal. She already was refining her acerbic wit.
Teresa was a special friend. Although we did not travel in the same social circles whenever we happened to meet it was as though no time had passed at all.
She was a kind, smart, funny and true blue friend.
I will miss her immensely
My heart goes out to her family and I shall keep her in my prayers.

In the late '80's when I first joined the library staff as a page, on one of my first evenings, as we gathered at the old circulation desk after we had finished closing and locking up, Teresa announced that she was re-casting for some old Elvis Presley movie and began assigning parts to various staff members and conveying the reason that they had landed that particular part. Apparently this was something that she routinely did for a familiar movie or well known book. There followed; acceptances, refusals, protests and alternative suggestions among the provoked and the amused!
As we staggered out onto the parking lot, laughing our heads off as if we had just left a really great party, I thought to myself, "this is going to be a fun place to work!"
It didn't take me long to realize that the companionship and camaraderie of the staff was the heartbeat of the WPL and the flow and throbbing of it could be felt through Teresa. She was one of the pulse points. Over the years, I would enjoy her wit and wisdom, her intellectually inspired sense of humor and her laughter and, on occasion, in our most private conversations, we shared our faith. So I hope that this portion of an old prayer is a comfort for those who love her.
"I give them back to You, O Lord, Who first gave them to me,
and as You did not lose them in the giving,
so do I not lose them in the return."

Teresa was a GEM! I loved her dry sense of humor and her ever-ready smile. I almost never go inside the library but did so last week and was happy to have Teresa wait on me. We commented how it would be very soon that we would see each other dining outside on Main Street as the warmer weather approached. Our kids had been good friends since Moses Y Beach elementary school. We all knew Ed, Julia and Nicholas. I had the honor of working with daughter Julia at Louie's Pizza. What a terrific family! Teresa's passing is such a shock!....'such a loss!

It cuts deeply that she is gone. But I have the very best memories of her. Sunday mornings at the Kristan kitchen table. Evenings on her front second story porch. Ed’s great meals. My mostly hilarious niece and nephew (you know who you are! ). And the most memorable: an evening spent in my brother’s pub. Like minds sharing. Unforgettable.
I love you Teresa

Julia,
What a loving remembrance of your mom. We’re sure she is smiling as she reads about her life, and probably thinking your gift of prose, your natural eloquence with words rubbed off from her! Yes we cried a little bit for your loss; and smiled that your mom’s life was lived to its fullest with resilience and humor. May your days, weeks, and months ahead be comforted by the support of your family and friends. We love you, Julia.
