Timothy O'Brien Obituary

Tim N. O'Brien, 63, a lifelong resident of Meriden, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Hartford Hospital after a short illness.

Born in Meriden in 1959, he was the son of the late Thomas G. Jr. and Jean (Griffin) O'Brien. He graduated from St. Joseph School and Platt High School, class of 1977, and was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church. He worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 42 years, retiring last year.

Tim spent many happy times with his family, his cousins the Hansens and Smiths and his best friends at Highland Lake in Winsted, during both summer and winter. He also enjoyed summers at Hammonasset. He was an avid fisherman, lifelong Denver Broncos fan, a daring snowmobiler and a big music lover, especially of the band ELP, whose members knew Tim by name. He befriended every customer on his mail route, including all of their dogs.

He is survived by his sons, Neil Thomas O'Brien (Lauren Dorau) of South Meriden, and Ian Joseph O'Brien (Miranda Purpura) of Delray Beach, Fla.; his siblings, Toby O'Brien of Winsted, Bill O'Brien of Meriden, Andrew O'Brien of Waterbury and Leah Muller (Kerry Muller) of Norfolk; his former wife, M.J. Palardy; his special friend, Susan Clements; six first cousins, six nieces and nephews and many close friends. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his cousins, Linda and David Hansen, Norman and Peter Smith and Cindy Manson.

Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Friday (TODAY) from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 22 Goodwill Ave., Meriden, with Monsignor Robert F. Tucker officiating. Burial will be private.

Ed and I are so upset to hear of Tim's passing and want to extend our condolences to his family. Tim wasn't just a mail carrier to us. He was like a friend that we got to see five days a week for a couple minutes. He was our mail carrier for over ten years on Lori Lane and the best one we ever had. He never failed to leave a treat for our crazy dog when delivering a package. Tim you will be missed.
