ERVING - Bernard ""Bernie"" S. Waryas, 88, of 8 Park Street of Erving, MA, died Saturday 3/21/15 at the Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. He was born in Turners Falls on September 20, 1926, the son of Francizek and Catherine (Baczek) Waryas. He attended local schools in Turners Falls and played football and baseball.
Bernie served in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the aircraft carrier, Lake Champlain.
He was a surveyor for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for 27 years before his retirement.
Bernie was a lifetime member and former President at the St. Kazimierz Society in Turners Falls. He loved all sports including the Patriots, the Red Sox and college basketball. He especially enjoyed attending all his grandchildren's sporting/school events and vacationing in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine with his wife, Gertrude. He had a ""top ten"" hot dog list with his number one being Flo's in York, Maine, ordered with the special sauce. He was known for putting at least 200,000 miles on his cars.
Besides his beloved wife of 61 years, Gertrude ""Puddy"" (LaMountain) Waryas, Bernie leaves three daughters, Sandra ""Bena"" Niedzwiedz and her husband Francis of Erving, Cheryl ""Che-Che"" Pienkos and her husband Daniel Sanuita of Westfield and Chanda L. Waryas and her fiance Michael Welles of Turners Falls, a brother, Victor ""Hurricane"" Waryas of South Deerfield, grandchildren, Amy ""Amalyn"" Eichorn and her husband Kurt, Megan ""Megley"" Niedzwiedz, Todd ""TD"" Sanuita, Audrey ""Audi"" O'Keefe and Ella ""Elle"" O'Keefe, two great grandsons, Samuel ""Sammy"" Eichorn and Andrew ""Andy"" Eichorn and several nieces and nephews.
Bernie was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Waryas Margola and Jean Waryas and four brothers, Henry ""Bill"" Waryas, Edward ""Finge"" Waryas, Chester ""Puller"" Waryas and Francis ""Junie"" Waryas.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Thursday 3/26 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, 84 K Street with the Rev. Charles J. DiMascola officiating. Burial will follow at the parish cemetery.
A calling hour will be held Thursday morning from 8:45-9:45 am at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square, Turners Falls.
