Donald Scott Obituary

Donald B. Scott

SOUTH HADLEY, MA — On Sunday May 30, 2021, Donald Bevil Scott, 91, passed away peacefully at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA. Donald was born on September 23, 1929 in Springfield, son of the late Solomon and Bernice Scott. He graduated from Greenfield High School in 1947. Don retired from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst as Director of Technical Support Services for the College of Engineering. Before that, Donald spent 20 years at the Greenfield Tap & Die.

Don was a longtime, active member of the First Congregational Church in Greenfield and the West Yarmouth Congregational Church on Cape Cod. He enjoyed singing in the church choirs and serving on various committees. Don's other passion was Freemasonry. Don was raised up in Mechanic's Lodge in Turners Falls and became a Grand Lodge Junior Grand Warden, Grand Lecturer and Scottish Rite 33rd degree mason over the years. He received his 50-year medal this year at his home in South Hadley, attended by 33 masonic brothers including bagpipers. Brother Scott was a Shriner and also received the Henry Price Medal.

Donald enjoyed golfing, bowling and was an avid reader and collector of old history, movie and masonic books. He also enjoyed coaching Little League and being a Cub Scout Den Leader.

Don is survived by his loving wife of 56 years Judy (Miner) and three daughters: Pamela Moore (Ray) of Springfield, Dr. Lisa Scott of Raleigh, NC and Michele T. DeFreece of Delhi, NY; two sons: Christopher Scott of Springfield and Shannon Scott of Northampton; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He also leaves to cherish his memory his sister Shirley Gordon of Springfield and brother Gary Scott of Greenfield. He was predeceased by his parents and his brothers Theodore, William, Stanley and Melvin.

There will be a Masonic Evergreen Service on July 16th at 10:00 A.M. at the Pacific Lodge located at 99 Main Street, Amherst followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 A.M. next door at the First Church Amherst. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Scottish Rite Learning Center, 458 Newtonville Ave, Newton MA 02460, which maintains more than fifty active Children Dyslexia Centers in thirteen states. Arrangements are under the direction of Wrisley Funeral Home, 90 Sugarloaf Street, South Deerfield.

RIP, Mr. Donald Scott. I met you once at the YMCA when I told you to hold onto my shoulder as I escorted you to the various machines. We talked and I shared that I know your son, Shannon. RIP, Mr. Shannon!

I did not know Mr. Scott personally, but I know he was very kind and often visited my dad, Sandy Cotton, when he was ill. My dad was also a Mason, so I think that is how they once knew one another. My mom mentioned his thoughtfulness often. Condolences to his family.
