Obituary published on Legacy.com by Beers & Story Funeral Home - South Hadley on Mar. 19, 2026.
Louis (Buddy) Polverini Sr. died peacefully on March 17th surrounded by his family; he was 85 years old.
Born on January 23rd, 1941, to Diamond and Mabel (Weber) he attended Chicopee Comp where he studied carpentry and began a lifelong love of woodworking. He began his career building cabinetry but he could build just about anything from wood and briefly earned money from these skills in retirement. Crafting wooden animal families, deer, picnic tables, flowerpot wheelbarrows and birdhouses he would travel to craft fairs to sell his wares. He even once designed a working bat house upon request. Louis spent the second half of his career working in maintenance for Big Y foods.
When Louis wasn't working he loved fishing. He spent countless hours on his boat on Lake Metacomet and the Quabbin and also the occasional deep sea fishing trip. He meticulously tied his own flies in his basement workshop and brought all his children on fishing trips, despite occasional hook incidents. Louis enjoyed nature and was always happy to hear a story about storms and unusual weather or interesting animal sightings. If you had a minute, he'd be happy to tell you one of his own stories.
A longtime member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Louis loved Christmas and was passionate about supporting Toys for Tots. He would set out in the early morning hours on Black Friday with a strategic plan to maximize his budget and get as many children's bikes as possible. He also enjoyed collecting stamps and playing with his dogs, most recently Lucy and Princess
On August 25th 1962, Louis married Joyce (Zolenski) and began what would become a remarkable 64 years of marriage. They enjoyed music and square dancing, road trips to the beach and the casino, and playing bingo. Together they took great pride in their home in Granby and raising their family. Louis worked incredibly hard and instilled that work ethic into his children -Lynn and her husband Ray Kauffman of Chicopee, Louis Polverini Jr. and his wife Lori of Granby, and Laura Watroba and her husband Christopher of West Springfield. He was also a treasured grandfather to Heather Fernandes (Jason), Leonard Lawson Jr. (Shawna), James Lawson, Raymond Kauffman Jr., and Alexandra, Evelyn, CJ Watroba, and was blessed to enjoy the companionship of ten great-grandchildren.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during visitation on Monday, March 23, from 4 PM to 6 PM at the Beers & Story South Hadley Funeral Home. A gathering will be held on Tuesday, March 24, at 9 AM at the funeral home, followed by a 10 AM Mass at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.
