Ernest Longley Obituary

Ernest (Ernie) Longley

Greenfield, MA - It is with heavy hearts and grateful spirits that we announce the passing of our brother Ernest (Ernie) Longley of Greenfield, who left us to soon on October 1, 2025. He was one of five children born to Ralph and Dorothy Longley in Baltimore Maryland on May 25, 1958. He was predeceased by his father (a Postal worker) in 1985, his mother (a librarian) in 2010, his oldest brother Stephen in 2008, his younger sister Joanne in 2006.

Ernest is survived by his two brothers, Morris (Larry) Longley of Colrain and Gary Longley of West Springfield and his wife, Ann Longley. He leaves behind a nephew, Donny Longley and his wife Katie of Belchertown and their children Coleman and Ethan. A niece Laura Longley of Winsor, CT and another niece Meagan (Longley) Allen and her husband Tony of Bentonville, AR and their children Dylan, Hannah and Elenor and a niece Jessica (Longley) LaPointe, her husband Justin of Colorado and their two daughters Charlotte and Eloise.

Having been raised as a child in Baltimore and Richmond, VA, Ernie lived in Ashfield, MA through his teen years and attended Mohawk Trail Regional High School where he was a well-liked. In his twenties he lived mostly in Greenfield, including some time at the Woolman Hill community, but he also hitchhiked extensively around the US, especially the California and Oregon coastlands between Los Angeles and Portland Oregon. Beginning in his thirties, he grew increasing reclusive due to complications from Epilepsy, never marrying or having children.

Throughout his life, Ernie was shy and introspective and had a stubborn streak but, lived his life with a full heart--- sometimes a little rough around the edges, but always full of love for family and friends.

He was a son, a brother, an uncle and a loyal friend. He was many things, funny, sometimes frustrating and unforgettable to those who knew him.

Rest easy Erine. We'll carry your spirit with us always.

A few of Ernie's friends will gather at the 99 Restaurant in Greenfield, MA on Monday the 13th from 12:00 to 1:30 to swap stories about him. If you knew him, even if just from high school you are more than welcome to come.

Dear Gary, Ann, Laura, Meagan and Jessica as well as other members of the family.
Although I never met Ernie, I did meet Gary and 2 of his wonderful daughters who came by twice to visit me at their former childhood home. It is with great sadness to have to even send condolences for the loss of your brother and Uncle but we are keeping you and your loved ones in our prayers, thoughts and hearts. May love surround you all.
Diane Birdsong.
