GEORGE DUMMAR Obituary

DUMMAR, GEORGE THOMAS JR. George Thomas Dummar Jr., age 54, of Branford passed away on September 28th at his home with his ever loving and devoted family by his side. George fought a courageous battle for 27 months against glioblastoma. He handled his illness with strength, pride and determination, much as he conducted his life, never losing his sense of humor. George was born on January 31, 1960 in North Arlington, New Jersey to Barbara McLaughlin Dummar of Naugatuck, and the late George T. Dummar, Sr. He was raised in Milford, CT and moved to Branford and married “his bride”, “Tish”, Patricia (Patty) Capone Dummar. He leaves behind his two sons, George III and Nicholas, the loves of his life who inspired him to fight every day. After graduating Jonathan Law High School, he attended Sacred Heart University and was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in his junior year. He played professional baseball for 4 years then continued to play in Italy where he learned to love the country and speak fluent Italian. He continued his love of baseball by coaching his sons from Little League through high school, where he was the Branford High School Varsity coach for 10 years, leading the Hornets to two State Championships. He earned the love and respect of many players over his years of coaching. Besides baseball, George was an avid Bruce Springsteen fan; and with his best friend, Alex Palluzzi, attended numerous concerts. Springsteen’s music could often be heard across the field during practice or game warm-ups. George was an inspiration to all of us. Through his illness, he proceeded with a sense of humor, never complaining, always fighting. A Champion ‘til the end! During George’s illness his family, friends, baseball players & acquaintances came together to support him and his family, along with Patty’s wonderful co-workers from SSCII. We were overwhelmed and will always be eternally grateful for the love, support, numerous meals, visits and acts of kindness shown to us over the past 2 years. To George’s mother, Barbara, and sister, Denise - we are eternally grateful for the loving sacrifices you made to help with his care, making it possible for our family to carry on during his illness. And a special thank you to Vernon & Janice Warner, who helped out in so many ways to make our lives easier every step of the way. We’d also like to thank the incredible staff of Smilow 8 who provided loving, compassionate care and respect, especially his nurses: Mary, Mary Ellen and Trina. And to Barbara, his hospice nurse, thank you. We are blessed to have each and every one of you in our lives. George leaves behind his loving sister, Denise Petelle (Glenn) of Naugatuck, and ever helpful brother “Bubba” Thomas Dummar of Stratford. He is also survived by this father-in law “Gege” George Capone; brother-in-law, Stephen Capone (Carla), sisters-in-law, Janice Warner (Vernon); Carolyn Narciso (Joe); Maria Hoyt (Jeff); and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and his devoted dog Molly. He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, George & Dorothy Dummar and his maternal grandparents, Bartholomew and especially Grandma Lee McLaughlin (his favorite). Family and friends may call on Wednesday, October 1st from 4 – 8 pm at W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main St., Branford, and are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on the morning of October 2nd at 10:00 am at St. Mary Church, Branford. Burial will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the George Dummar Baseball Scholarship Fund c/o 31 Pepperwood Lane, Branford, CT 06405. My condolences go out to the Dummar family. He has always been a very kind human being. I enjoy being around him so much. He always had a great sense of humor and had a unbelievable passion for the game of baseball.

Coach Dummar was a very down to earth man. He really believed in his player's so much. He was always positive, and he treated everyone with respect.

I miss you coach.

In our prayers,

Tom Chieppo

Wish we could be there today George with your family and friends as you are laid to rest. Thank you for the wonderful memories you provided us when you and Pat visited us in Hawaii and on our many trips back home to Connecticut. Most memorable will be the hearty, gut felt laughs provided on behalf of your wonderful sense of humor and sarcasm. Your charismatic personality and huge presence will be forever missed. I'm sure you are looking down and are so proud of your supportive wife, devoted sons and all the families along with their sons that you have touched. Goodbye.....RIP

Patty and Family:

Deepest sympathy and heartfelt thoughts on your loss. George was truly a remarkable and kind man. We have many fond memories of the SNET yellow page group trip to Italy and how he helped us all to enjoy the Italy he knew. Ted was amazed how he addressed the gypseys that approached him and sent them on their way while fluently speaking Italian.

Our thoughts are with the family and we will keep George in our prayers.
