Irene D. Muka

Leyden, MA - Irene D. Muka, 96, of 209 South County Road, Leyden, passed away on Monday January 22, 2024 at RegalCare-Greenfield. She was born on September 18, 1927, in Keene, NH, the daughter of Gilbert L. and Catherine (Walker) Dompier. She attended Keene Elementary school and graduated from Keene High School.

Irene worked for a Keene based insurance company after graduating high school. In 1951 she married Lewis R. Muka (who predeceased Irene in 2020) and moved to Leyden to start her life on a dairy farm. The change from growing up in urban Keene and working in an office environment to living on and running a successful dairy farm with her husband was daunting. She learned how to drive trucks and tractors, bale hay and harvest corn silage all while raising their two sons. She loved to grow flowers, and plant and preserve vegetables.

In the early 1970's she and Lewis sold the dairy cattle but maintained all other aspects of the farm. It was then that Irene took a position with the Franklin County Trust Company in Greenfield where she worked in the loan department in various positions. After completing 20 years of service, Irene retired to the farm with Lewis.

Irene was predeceased by her brother Francis and her two sisters Anna and Lorraine. She leaves two sons, Michael and his wife Irene of Center Valley, PA and James Muka and his wife Joyce of Leyden; four grandchildren, Shannon Schneider and her husband Fred of Macungie, PA, Matthew Muka and his wife Ella of Leyden, Peter Muka and his partner Laura Hancock of Silver Springs, NV, and Kyle Muka and his wife Sarah of Severna Park, MD; six great grandchildren, Mason, Liam, Eleanor, Remi, Sawyer and Hunter; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services and burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the doner's choice.
