John Phelps Obituary

John "Jack" Phelps

Erving, MA - John "Jack" Phelps, 90, of Erving, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 10, 2025.

He was born on May 1, 1935, in Montague, to Francis and Mabel (LaPierre) Phelps. Jack was raised with a strong sense of community, a love for life, and an infectious sense of humor that stayed with him throughout his 90 years. He grew up in Shelburne Falls and was a proud graduate of Arms Academy.

For more than two decades, Jack owned and operated Snelling and Snelling, a temporary job agency, where he helped countless people find meaningful work. He then went on to serve with distinction in the Franklin County Sheriff's Department, retiring after 18 years as a Captain in the Process Division.

On September 27, 1971, Jack married the former Lois Batchelder, the love of his life. Together, they shared over 53 wonderful years, until Lois's passing on January 1, 2025. Their love was deep and unwavering, so much so that Jack insisted on having "No Greater Love Possible" inscribed on their gravestone, proclaiming his devotion for the world to see long after they were gone. Jack often spoke fondly of their travels, shared laughter, and quiet evenings, cherishing the simple joys of life alongside his beloved Lois.

Jack and Lois spent many winters as Florida snowbirds, where they made lifelong friends and created memories filled with laughter, music, and adventure. Jack was a lover of music, travel, and casino gambling. A talented musician, he played both guitar and keyboard, delighting audiences for 35 years as a member of Lucy and the Starlighters Band. Friends and family will fondly remember his impromptu performances, his easy smile, and the joy he brought to every gathering.

He leaves his stepsons, Erik Semb and his wife Tracy of Erving, with whom he made his home and who were his devoted caregivers; Duane Semb and his wife Tara of Dunedin, Florida; his daughter, Linda Phelps of Agawam; and the "light of his life", his beloved granddaughter, Kimberlyn Semb.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Jack was predeceased by his sister, Bonnie Craig.

Jack was fortunate to have a remarkable home care team that provided him with exceptional compassion, friendship, and support. He shared a special bond with Amber, his "angel on Earth," whom he loved and adored. Amber's kindness, love, and support brought him great comfort, especially after Lois' passing. Amber's son, Lucas, also held a very special place in his heart and was one of Jack's biggest fans. Additionally, the family is thankful for the amazing care and support provided by Pioneer Valley Hospice and Palliative Care.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 5, 2025, from three to six PM at the French King Bowling Center, 55 French King Highway, Erving, MA. The gathering will be a potluck-style event, and all attendees are encouraged to bring a dish to share. A private graveside service will take place at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pioneer Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 101 Munson St., Suite 103, Greenfield, MA 01301, or to the Franklin County Sheriff's Dept. TRIAD, 160 Elm St., Greenfield, MA 01301.

September 22, 2025

It is with sadness that I became aware of Jack's passing. To Duane and Eric, please accept my condolences.
Among Jack's many contributions to the Franklin County community was his tenure as a school committee member for the Erving Elemntary School where I served with great pleasure as the school's principal. His willingness to spend the time and energy in pursuit of educational excellence were rewarded by the many accolades the school received both in Franklin County and the Commonwealth. I appreciated his support and leadership throughout our work together and the many conversations we shared over his tenure. Rest in peace, Jack, as you now are reunited with your beloved, wife, Lois. Respectfully, Ron Areglado
