John Tomasetti Obituary

John Tomasetti

Shutesbury, MA - There are lots of tears in the valley, for John Tomasetti died on June 6 in Springfield, Mass. Mr. T was known by this moniker by many of his students, a reference to the burly television character on the "A Team." The tears are for a wonderful man who became an exemplary teacher and watercolorist.

John's life began in Quincy, Massachusetts, where he attended local schools. As a large boy John was recruited to play the tuba in the high school marching band. He was not allowed to focus fully on the tuba as he was harassed into playing football for obvious reasons by the coach. At Quincy High School, during his senior year he was encouraged by a counselor to attend the local community college. He surprised himself by doing well and prepared to extend his education at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. That is how he made his way to Western Massachusetts.

His teaching career began in the tiny town of Wendell, Massachusetts in an appropriately tiny wooden schoolhouse, Mr. T in one room, a second teacher in the other. John quickly became a teaching principal, much beloved in both roles.

In the early 70's John was urged to take his many skills to a brand new school in Erving, Massachusetts. There he taught first grade for the remainder of his teaching career, retiring after thirty plus years. For decades he proudly entertained both staff and students as he skillfully taught children how to read. His humor and gentle manner helped his students to be comfortable while learning.

John had serious commitments other than teaching. He was a young devotee of body building, creating an upper body that required specially sewn shirts. John enjoyed the workouts and following the career of Arnold Schwarzenegger, champion body builder and television and film star.

Another passion of John's was his house on Lake Wyola. He purchased the house as a rustic cabin with few amenities. With the help of a couple of local carpenters and John's marvelous sense of design, John transformed this cabin into a four season beauty, one that he was very proud of. This house became his studio for painting and framing. It also served as his gallery and a place for parties.

Arriving at middle age, Mr. Tomasetti decided to become a student of water color painting. He was largely self-taught but took many classes, enjoying them all but especially the instruction from his hero, the well-respected master teacher and artist Scott Pryor. John's watercolors won many awards and were sought after by many in the valley and beyond. He was first encouraged by Peg Politella, the Valley's art patron. She urged John to enter Old Deerfield's Art Show. From there the rest is history.

John's family is very small. He was born in 1948 to Viola and Arthur Tomasetti. He was joined by three brothers. All have predeceased him. Friends became John's family. Jim Callahan, John's best buddy since elementary school, stayed fully committed to John right through his illnesses. Jay Loubris, a local friend, missed few days during John's illness. Alan Task, from his new home in Portland, Maine, never missed an opportunity to see John upon returns to the valley. John remained connected to many of his Erving Elementary colleagues, particularly Nita Chase.

Through the years John has had two much beloved partners. Terry Andrews and John spent many years together. John became very involved with Terry's family, especially with her mother, niece and grandniece. Terry passed in 2017.

The last few years John and Susan Robertson developed a deep and wonderful friendship. Susan became John's loving caregiver right through John's multiple convalescences. She was John's rock.

Burial will be private. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for June 28, from 1 - 4 pm, at the Deerfield Inn in Old Deerfield. Bring a story or memory to share. Donations can be made in John's name to Deerfield Valley Art Association.

John and I met the summer between 3rd and 4th grade. We lived on the same street in the Wollaston area of Quincy although my end was called Tyler St. and his end was called Oxenbridge Rd. We were probably half a dozen houses apart. I knew his family and he knew mine. All are now gone. We were both middle children and young for our class as most of our senior year in high school we were 16. We walked to school together most of the days of all those years. At 10 years old we both got paper routes that were back to back. We took trumpet lessons together and played in the Jr High Band and then different instruments in the North Quincy High School Band for two years. Despite all the similarities in our young lives we had different interests. John with weight lifting, football, and art. I was a swimmer. Yet we were always Best Of Friends and despite the distances between us that was never lost. John Tomasetti was a Gentle Giant. Rest in Peace my friend!

It is with appreciation of John and profound sadness that this talented educator and artist has left us.

As the former Erving Elementary School Principal, I had the distinct good fortune to "recruit" him away from Wendell to join our staff back in the early 1970's. At that time, it was unfashionable for a male to teach early primary grade students, but John became a role model in doing so. As a teacher in our Level 1 Team Teacher model - a combined grade level of first and second grade students, he proved to be an exemplary educator! His warmth and gentle persona endeared him to his students despite the fact he was equally an imposing body builder! In addition to his excellent teaching, I witnessed first-hand his fledging artistic talent. As the years passed, he honed his skills and became well known throughout " The Valley" and beyond!

I join those who came to know and admire him as a colleague and friend in celebrating his life and mourning his passing! Rest in peace, John, you have inspired many people, both young and older. Your legacy is intact.

Respectfully,

Ron Areglado

I have heard John's name for many years before I ever met him. He was a very dear friend of both my parents through the Deeefield Valley Art Association. When my sister moved to MA to care for our parents, I met John and Terry several times. I was so glad Susan developed such a wonderful friendship with both of them. After Terry passed, Susan and John kept that friendship going. Thank you John for all you did for my parents, and over thr last few years for Susan. She may have been John's rock, but I know John was Susan's rock also. RIP John, you will definitely be missed.

John was a grade school teacher of mine at Erving Elementary. My mom Irene was the school secretary at the time. My mom loved John's artwork and collected many, I am proud to have inherited them. I have six watercolors and the color-wheel, of which I think he made many, its very inventive and unique.

John was a bear of a man, and a true gentle giant. John was easily my mom's favorite, as he was kind, funny and genuine. I am sad to hear he has passed, he has inspired many and has left us so many watercolor treasures.

Thank you John.

A wonderful man and fraternity brother. His nickname in the fraternity was Barrel, for obvious reasons at the time. I have 3 of his water colors and only wish I had the chance to purchase more. I can imagine there are a ton of sad young people out there who had him for a teacher and principal. Rest in peace my friend.

I met John when I joined the Old Deerfield painting group. Over the years, I have fond memories of him, painting with him, and getting advice on painting. He was an exceptional water colorist and person. Will miss him very much.

With all due respect, I consider his career beginning at Shutesbury Elementary School. He was, I believe, an intern while he was at UMass. I consider him one of the best teachers I ever had. After he left, was happy that I could continue to see him at the school union's annual trip to Mount Tom amusement park. I remember the last time I saw him - he rode the Whip with me, excitedly telling me about his new job in Erving. About 55 years ago and I still have that memory. That's what a great guy Mr. Tomasetti was.

So saddened to hear of Johns passing. I got to know John when my wife worked with him at Erving Elementary School. He was a big, gentle caring man. A good sense of humor and definitely a fun guy. We have 4 of his paintings which are just beautiful, one of which has his old car in it. He will live on through his paintings and the many young people he taught in his life. RIP John.

I was very sorry to hear this news of John´s passing. He was a neighbor and close friend of my Aunt Nancy Fiske on Lake Wyola and a dear friend of my cousin Keith Fiske. Thanks to them, I also knew John and am an admirer of his work and the proud owner of three of his paintings. I thought his house and studio on the lake was stunning. I feel lucky to have met him and send my deepest condolences to all who knew and loved him.

I am so sorry to hear that John has passed away. However, I am happy to have 3 of John's watercolors. My mother purchased one large one which I inherited when she passed and it hangs in my living room. I later purchased 2 small scenes that hang in my bedroom. All 3 were purchased directly from John at this home on Lake Wyola. I enjoyed meeting John and looking through his paintings in his home. I recall that many, many years ago, John rented space in my aunt's (Nancy Fiske), house also on Lake Wyola. I am happy that I got to meet John and very happy to have 3 of his paintings to remember him by. My condolences to those he leaves behind.
