Martin Sackman Obituary

SOUTH DEERFIELD – M. Douglas Sackman, 100, of South Deerfield died on Sunday (03/26/17) at home. He was educated at Duke and Brown Universities and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Doug lived and worked most of his life in East Rockaway, NY as a high school English teacher, assistant principal, guidance counselor and baseball coach. He also served as a volunteer fireman and was Fire Chief for a period of time. He retired to Massachusetts where he was a guide at Historic Deerfield and a member of the PVMA. He was devoted to his family, the NY Yankees and Duke basketball. Doug loved music and books, and was a founding member of the Melville Society.
Predeceased by Ruth, his wife of 69 years, Doug leaves six children: Geoffrey Sackman of St. Augustine, FL, Barbara Sackman of South Deerfield, Ellie Anderson of Greenfield, Douglas Sackman of Oswego, NY, Christine Pogorzala of Berkshire, NY and Margaret Raye of Salam, NH; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
All services are private, under the direction of Wrisley Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Historic Deerfield Development Office, P.O. Box 321, Deerfield, MA 01342. Expressions of sympathy available at www.wrisleyfuneralhome.com.
