Since 1982, I became friends with the Fritz Family. I always looked forward to traveling from Gloucester, MA to Greenfield, MA to go ice fishing and to Northfield, MA to visit "My Valley Farm."

Sophie and I talked about farm life, since she raised her family on the farm, and I received my college degrees in Large Animal Science and Agricultural Technology. And we both enjoyed home cooking, nothing beats farm fresh ingredients. So, during the Autumn seasons, I would bring her homemade meals to savor during the cold, winter months.

During our visits, telephones call or letters, our favorite amusement was our passion for gentle ribbings and good laughs. She always teased me about my close relationship with her brother-in-law, Tiny. She even managed to whisper a wise remark at his graveside funeral, so that I could not control my smile and low-key chuckle.

It was such a challenge for me to reciprocate the tease. Then, on one of my visits, she proudly presented an interesting newspaper article published in the Greenfield Recorder. It detailed events leading up to the letter she received from Queen Elizabeth´s Lady-in-Waiting. This is the day I learned that Sophie and Queen Elizabeth II were born on the same day and year, and both were celebrating their 92nd birthdays. This exciting news was a trump card, one that I tucked away for a future ribbing.

So, when Queen Elizabeth II passed away five years later (September 2022), I sent Sophie a card to congratulate her for outliving the Queen. Even though I did not hear back, I know she giggled, then silently admitted that "Foxy got me good!"

It saddens me to hear this news, especially since I was planning to visit later this month. Sophie will certainly be missed but her spirit will always be with me. I will always cherish the times we shared together.

May the memories of Sophie bring the Fritz Family closer in heart.

My Deepest Sympathy,

Foxy
