Theresa Cassidy Obituary

Theresa A. Cassidy

Ashfield, MA - Theresa A. (DeMarco) Cassidy, 93, of Ashfield, Mass., passed away peacefully on June 28. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend, Theresa, Terry, "Treese," or Mrs. C will be missed by all who knew her.

Born on April 16, 1932, in Derby, Conn., Theresa was the youngest daughter of Ralph and Elizabeth DeMarco and sister to Antoinette, Anthony, Barbara, Genevieve, Lucille, Louis, Michael, Ralph, and Richard. She had deep respect for her Italian heritage and loved to share stories about her many siblings, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and cousins.

Theresa wore many hats throughout her life and was proud of each and every one: homemaker, professional administrative assistant, volunteer, caregiver. She welcomed all visitors to her home and had one rule: nobody went hungry. No matter the time of day or the reason for or length of your visit, there were no empty stomachs on her watch.

On September 29, 1956, Theresa married Raymond Cassidy, and they settled into married and family life in their home state of Connecticut, raising four daughters. In pursuit of a new career opportunity for Raymond, the Cassidy family moved to Ashfield in 1971. A bit of a city mouse, Theresa was initially challenged by the change to a more rural environment and the distance from home and family. But, over time, she came to love her new hometown, making many friends, becoming involved in town activities, finding interesting and meaningful jobs, and finding a sense of place and community that was with her to the very end.

The family would like to thank the caregivers and staff at Sunrise Senior Living, Sterling Village, and Autumn Hospice for their kindness, compassion, and care.

Theresa is survived by her daughters, Barbara Cassidy (Eric), Karen Kay, and Christine Cassidy (Alan), as well as her grandchildren, Simon Chasalow, Alex Kay (Betsy), Nathanial Kay (Maddy), Christopher Kay, Eric Hvoslef (Lauren), Julia Hvoslef, and Taylor Cassidy, great grandchildren Logan and Oliver Hvoslef, her brother, Richard, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, and her daughter, Mary Cassidy.

Private services will be held with burial in Norton Hill Cemetery in Ashfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mark Mission, 29 Sugarloaf St., South Deerfield, MA, 01373.

To Barbara, Chris, and Karen: Doris and I send our sincerest condolences on your Mom's passing. She was always so good to Doris and me. As Doris said to me it will seem so strange to pass the house and know that Terry isn't there. May she rest in peace.

Haven't seen Terry in a long time. She was a very special friend of me and my mother. A lot of fun to be with. May god bless you.

Our family met the Cassidy family when they moved into our neighborhood. Conversations between Mrs. C and my mother, Thelma, began while they were hanging clothes out to dry in the sun. Friendships began to develop and have continued for 60 years.

The memories made with the Cassidy family are to cherish for a lifetime.

Take some time to grieve. Remember her smile, laugh, sense of humor, and advice about life's challenges that we all encounter. Cherish the love that she gave to everyone who knew her.

With love,
Lois and Ted Schleich

Sincere sympathy to all of you. Terry was a great friend for the past 39 years and a passenger to and from work for a lot of those years. I heard many stories of Terry's life and her brothers and sisters and her love of Connecticut. I have missed her a lot since she left her beloved home last August. May she rest in peace after such a wonderful life. She was very proud of her children and their families.
