Wesley Snapp Obituary

Wesley Maynard Snapp

Sanford, FL - Wesley Maynard Snapp, 92, of Sanford, FL, passed away Thursday, October 16th, 2025, after a brief hospital stay. Snapp was a respected high school teacher, an Army veteran, and longtime swim coach and official.

Born in Wardensville, West Virginia on December 23rd, 1932, Snapp was the son of the Reverend Albert MB. and Marguerite (Melin) Snapp. As his father's Methodist ministry took him from parish to parish, Snapp attended many schools during his childhood, going to three different schools his senior year alone. Snapp briefly attended Randolph Macon College before joining the U.S. Army. Upon his honorable discharge, Snapp attended Springfield College, class of 1958. He later secured his Master's degree in Education Administration from Westfield State College.

Snapp met Rosemarie Yetter while at Springfield. Marrying in 1957, the couple remained inseparable for the next 49 years, until her passing in 2007. Snapp took his first teaching job in 1958 at St. Johnsbury Academy in St. Johnsbury, VT. The family later made their permanent residence in Greenfield, MA. Snapp thereupon took a job teaching English at Turners Falls High School, where he would remain for 29 years.

Owing to his competitive swimming experience while in the Army and college, Snapp was approached early in his Turners Falls tenure to be the inaugural coach for the school's nascent swim program. After a few challenging years, Snapp nurtured the squad into a highly competitive team, winning multiple league titles and producing champion swimmers. Turners Falls this year recognized Snapp for his contributions to the program, naming its aquatic center in his honor.

He loved listening to music, playing golf, skiing, and spending time with his wife and family at ocean getaways in York Beach, ME, and New Smyrna Beach, FL.

Survivors include son Brian Snapp and wife Pat of Lake Mary, FL; son Douglas Snapp and wife Tricia of Burnsville, MN; son Daniel Snapp and wife Kelli of Chaska, MN; grandchildren Rebecca, Joshua, Lauren, and Meredith; and many nieces and nephews. Snapp was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Rosemarie (Yetter) Snapp, brothers Lloyd Thomas Snapp and Albert Earle Snapp, and sisters Pauline Ahlemann and Marjorie Curry.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Yesterday

Mr. Snapp was a great teacher, but an even better swim/life coach. Wes had a way of bringing out the best in all of his students and athletes. I learned more from him than any other person in my life.

I will never forget the image of him standing in the big yellow swim bus stairwell smoking his pipe, chatting with the bus driver. Us swimmers gleefully destroying thousands of calories of McDonalds after a swim meet, Tasser eating 10 happy meals. If you were there, you remember.

Yesterday

Mr. Snapp was not only respected. He was revered by so many TFHS students. He had a gift for making students feel confident and inspired to appreciate the nuances of the English language. The TFHS Class of 1985 is deeply saddened by his passing.
