Betty Mabs Obituary
Betty's journey through this life began in earnest as this girl from the city fell in love and married a farmer, Arthur Mabs from St. Joseph, Michigan in 1941. Affectionately known to her family as Grandma Betty, she was an inspirational part of the lives of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Betty was always on the go, leaving a rich and wonderful legacy of service. In Orange County she worked as a Cafeteria Manager before moving to Porterville, CA in 1956. Here she was a church Youth Director and camp counselor for 35 years, touching the lives of many young people. She served as Porterville High School PTA President, Member of Christian Women's Club, Bible Teacher, Jensen's Stationary Store clerk and Sierra Hills Ambassador. Betty enjoyed sewing, crocheting, gardening, cooking new recipes, scrapbooking, grandchildren sleep overs, family genealogy and heirlooms, and especially her hot coffee straight and black. Betty will be greatly missed by her family and many friends who have benefited from her loving and caring life. A special thank you to those who lovingly cared for Betty in her final days in Sierra View Hospital and Valley Health Care Center. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years. She is survived by her sons, David (Gloria), and Donald (Kathleen), and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Viewing is for family and friends on Sunday, September 23, 2018 from 3:00 to 7:00 pm at Myers Funeral Home. Graveside service is on Monday, September 24, 2018 at 10:00 AM at Hillcrest Cemetery. Celebration of Life service will follow at 11:00 at Henderson Ave. Baptist Church, 1896 W. Henderson Avenue, with a Reception Luncheon following. Due to Betty's deep commitment to the youth of yesterday and today, donations can be made to Henderson Avenue Baptist Church Youth Ministry.

I'm still hoping someone from Betty's family will contact me so I can keep in touch with my family, even though we are distantly related. Loved Betty and was so happy to meet her and know we were related. As she was such a lovely lady, I'm sure she is still missed so much.

My name is Anne Carter. Your Mother's Mother was my grandfather's sister, Eva. Betty traveled to Portland to meet me and her other cousins, My mother, Evelyn and another cousin, Maryellen. We were delighted to have her stay with us and show her around Portland. On travels south, my husband and I took your parents to dinner one night in Porterville and had a wonderful visit. We have stayed in touch by mail and phone since her visit here in Portland. Was alarmed when her Christmas Card was returned in the mail so worried that something had happened to her. After some research, I discovered she had passed away. I would love to talk to anyone from her family if that would be possible. I can be reached at 503-645-2789 most anytime. So sorry for your loss of this lovely lady, we were so fond of her. We had visited by phone around spring time and we promised we'd talk more frequently. Sorry that didn't get done.

Betty became a friend as mother of her sons who were members of an English class, taught by me and from Christian Business Women's luncheons. She was always aware, friendly, and active, wherever our paths crossed. I know she made her pilgrimage from here to eternal life by her commitment to Christ many years before and the exemplary life she lived, since making that commitment. Blessings to each member of her family, as you give thanks for the many lives, touched by her love and compassion. In Him, there is the peace and comfort of a life well lived..
