Yvonne Busch Obituary

Yvonne V. Busch was born in New Orleans on October 18, 1929, daughter of Edward "Eddie" Busch and Bertha Scott Busch who both preceded her in death. She grew up in the historic Treme' section of the city. Busch, who mastered several brass instruments and the woodwinds, became a touring professional by the age of 12. She crisscrossed the United States as a member of the critically acclaimed "International Sweethearts of Rhythm" and the "Swinging Rays of Rhythm," two all-female bands sponsored by the Piney Woods Country Life School, and historic African-American boarding school located in Piney Woods, Mississippi. After leaving the Piney Woods School in 1943, Busch returned to New Orleans and completed her high school studies at Gilbert Academy. She broke gender barriers when she became the only female in the "all-male" Southern University (Baton Rouge) Jazz Band, and later she joined the Dooky Chase Orchestra. Yvonne Busch made a significant contribution to the culture of New Orleans throughout her 32-year career teaching music and directing bands in the city's public schools, including Booker T. Washington (1951-52), Joseph S. Clark (1952-58), and George Washington Carver (1958-1983). Busch's students include saxophonist James Rivers, who played and composed music for several Clint Eastwood films, including The Bridges of Madison County, Bird and Tightrope; Herlin Riley, renowned jazz drummer with Wynton Marsalis and The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra; George Davis, and original guitarist in the legendary Broadway production A Chorus Line, and who performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Nancy Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn; drummer John Boudreaux, who performed with Billy Eckstine, George Benson and Sam Cooke; and drummer James Black, who performed with jazz legends Yusef Lateef, Freddie Hubbard and Cannonball Adderley. Former band students of Yvonne Busch also included drummers Joseph "Smokey" Johnson, Sullivan Dabney, Herb Taylor, Ernie Elly, and Tony "Oulaboula" Bazley; and New Orleans music legends James 'Sugarboy" Crawford, Theron Lewis, Porgy Jones and, many more! The story of her remarkable career is documented in Chapter 3 of Dr. Al Kennedy's book, Chord Changes on the Chalkboard: How Public School Teachers Shaped Jazz and the music of New Orleans. Expanding upon Kennedy's book, Leonard Smith III, one of Busch's former band students at Carver Senior High School, produced and directed the award-winning documentary "A Legend in the Classroom: The Life Story of Ms. Yvonne Busch." Yvonne Busch's story beckons researchers to take a look at a previously unexplored area in the lives of New Orleans's most successful musicians. Through her public school classrooms and band rooms, she created a musical legacy that includes jazz and classical musicians, rhythm & blues performers and gospel singers. She also mentored an impressive list of former student-teachers who learned from watching Yvonne Busch and who are now passing on the music traditions she instilled in them. Yvonne Busch was, by any account, an extraordinary teacher. On Friday, February 28, 2014 at 6:11 am Ms. Yvonne Busch became a heavenly teacher in God's Musical Garden of Eden and joined her parents, nephew, Darrell McIntosh and brother-in-law, Herman Burns in Glory. Those left to enjoy her earthly musical and no doubt heavenly musical talents now are: her sister, Elaine B. Burns; nephews Kaven McIntosh and Keith (Velena) Gant; cousins, Ursula (June) Lee, Delores Coye' as well as generations of other nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, students and music lovers who enjoyed her life, teachings and love of music. Family, friends, students, teachers and musicians of all genres are all invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at St. David Catholic church, 5617 St. Claude Ave., NOLA for 10:00 am. Interment is in Providence Memorial Park, 8200 Airline Dr., Metairie, LA. Visitation begins at 8:00 am in the church.

To the Busch Family,
Growing up a few doors down from the Busch Family, was a pleasure. Although Ms Busch didn't have any children, she always took the time to share herself with the neighborhood children. It has been many years since we saw her, however, the things she taught us as young children have remained throughout our lives. May she now rest in Peace, for certainly the heavenly Bands are all in perfect harmony.
Sincerely,
Former Neighbors

Blest Be The Tie That Binds Our Hearts in Christian Love!

The memories and lessons taught by Miss Busch are so numerous. My experience in Carver's band and the teachings of Miss Busch taught me discipline, teamwork and diligence. As a part of our family and growing up in the Lower 9th ward, Miss Busch exemplified loving, caring and sharing to the entire neighborhood. She is truly a mentor in my music ministry. We know that she is now resting in the Arms of Jesus Christ and "Perfectly Healed."

Words cannot explain how grateful and honored I am to be blessed to have been a drummer in Ms. Busch's great band at Carver Senior High during my years at Carver (1976-1980). You were like my mother, expecting excellence from me as you labored mentoring me. You expected results, not excuses from any of your student musicians whether it be during football season, Mardi Gras parades, or your concert band. You groomed me to more than just a drummer but a musician, able to hold and carry my own wherever I may play. I remember my first encounter with you in the classroom when I suffered the consequence of offering you an excuse for not playing right and to your standards. You demanded I read and play the music correctly and sent me away to the practice room saying, "Fuzzy, you better learn the music or else!" I know what that meant. Ever since then, you expected my best or risk getting kicked out of your band. When I finally got it together, you called me Fuzzy ever since because of my wild hair. That's when I knew you genuinely cared for me and my success as a musician. I'll never forget you Ms. Busch. I owe you so much. There will never, ever be another like you. Thank you Master for placing this great blessing from You in my life.

When I think of Ms. Busch these words comes to mind.

If I can help somebody as I pass along,
If I can cheer somebody with a word or song,
If I can show somebody he is trav'ling wrong,
Then my living shall not be in vain.

If I can do my duty as a Christian ought,
If I can bring back beauty to a world up-wrought,
If I can spread love's message that the Master taught,
Then my living shall not be in vain.

A great teacher. As a percussionist, she taught me how to play many instruments in the percussion family. 74/75 she encouraged several band students and myself to join the "Adolescence" under the leadership of the late Alvin Batiste. The "Adolescence" performed at the Jazz Fest. Myself and several of her students (percussionist) left Carver and was able to audition and obtained a spot in the Southern University Marching Band. Several of us became section leaders in the percussion section at Southern University. I am so thankfully she taught fundamentals, musicianship, leadership and appreciation for array of music. Thanks Ms. Busch for expanding my appreciation and skills in the percussion section.

Heartfelt Condolences And Prayers to Ms Busch Legacy.
Look to the hills for your health and strength cometh from The Lord.
Ms Busch was my Uncle Jerry Browder Band Director at Carver.
My Uncle wanted me to be as good as he was,so he would bring me by Ms Busch to learn how to play the clarinet. He told my parents/ grandmother Ms Busch was better then Werleins.
That she was! Under her leadership and guidance, I started playing the clarinet at McDonough 19, Little Woods & Livingston Schools. Ms Busch taught me how to play "Yes Jesus Loves Me " on the clarinet and that's all I wanted to play instead of learning any other music.
I Thank God for this virtuous woman of a God and Band Director. She gave of herself to so many in the music industry teaching them the fundamentals of music.
God Good And Faithful Servant, WELL DONE

To the family of Yvonne V. Busch,

Ms. Busch was an inspiration to the many students that she taught. She supervised me during my student teaching at George Washington Carver Senior High School. I gained a wealth of musical knowledge from her, which helped to prepare me for my career as a band director. Ms. Busch was an excellent band director, a blessing from God.
May God grant strength and consolation during this difficult time.

A very special person who made a big impact on my life. A real "Teacher" in more ways than one. Because 'private lessons' cost money that I did not have, Ms Busch gave me 'individual' lessons so to not send the wrong message to those who could pay. Not only did she teach music, she taught life to those who played in her bands. Ms Busch, you earned your place in heaven; rest peacefully!

Lessons I learned from Ms. Busch...

What makes earthly and spiritual greatness?

A. Billions of dollars according to Forbes or Fortune?

B. What others say you are or how bad or good you are perceived?

C. Who fears you or who would dare disobey your command(s)?

1. Watching Ms. Busch as a Carver Eagle- Junior Side, and looking forward to the Rams side- Senior Side (Though I left before entering the Senior Side) she taught me this... Life is an audition. Passing and failing is all about the pursuit of excellence.

Excellence is a spiritual link for good. It confounds prejudice, racism, bigotry and evil!

2. Ms. Busch taught, "Talent is the ability to accomplish what others find difficult, Genius is the ability to accomplish what is impossible for talent".

Looking over the accomplishments of Ms. Busch- 3 Things ring true to me...

1. Her talents confounded the bigotry of her time.

2. She was a Jazzy, Classical and Soul Lady- Just like the music she taught, and she lived it on and off the conductor's podium!

3. She always raised the bar, but she taught skills and gave examples about how to scale great heights. While it is said, "Whatever you leave, you leave behind"- Ms. Busch and her spirit of excellence and accomplishments will always be linked to us and what is really important in life.

Her gifts to thousands of students and others like me, transcend what is tangible or what can be said except for 'ONE'- HE says..., "WELL DONE MS. BUSCH"!!!

Yvonne V. Busch, come on your tell it like it is. A legend in her own time, made the music come alive, could hear every sour note a student made, made the band march as though they were the only band to play on the field. Was not afraid to discipline. Respected and well known by many. So let the life she lived speak for her. To the family, let your tears be tears of joy for going home but not forgotten is a legend.
