Leon H. "Squeakie" Eakes
May 24, 1913 - September 18, 2008
Leon Eakes was born on May 24, 1913 in Pleasant Hills, Missouri, and he passed away at the age of 95 on Thursday, September 18, 2008. Leon was known for his warmth, integrity, entrepreneurial spirit, humor, and sharp mind until the end. He opened his home and his heart to many, and encouraged all he knew to think positively and to strive for greatness.
Leon moved to Stockton in 1931 to attend College of the Pacific on a football scholarship under the famous coach Amos Alonzo Stagg. There he met his beloved wife, Louise "Weedie" Eakes, to whom he was married for 69 years until she passed away in 2006.
Leon served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He returned from the Navy to go into the insurance business. In 1948, he co-founded the Stockton Quarterback Club, a booster club for Tiger football, and served as its Charter President. In 1953, he became an Agency Manager for State Farm Insurance Company for San Joaquin, Amador, and Calaveras Counties. In 1978, before his retirement, he was awarded the Executive Trophy for having the most outstanding agency out of the 56 agencies in the western regional office.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Weedie Eakes of Stockton. He is survived by his four children, Wendy Frush of Stockton, Jon Eakes of Montreal, Quebec, Sharon Pam Eakes of Sewickley, PA and Lon Eakes of Napa; his seven grandchildren, Ben Frush of Stockton, Ashley Frush of San Francisco, Yang Hai Eakes of Montreal, Lisa Mitchell of Fair Oaks, Gordon Mitchell of Pittsburgh, PA, Kent Eakes and Clary Allen of Oklahoma; and his eight great grandchildren.
A "Celebration of Life" Service will be held Saturday, October 4, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the O'Connor Woods church sanctuary, located at 3400 Wagner Heights Road in Stockton. Please wear your friendliest colors to the celebration of Leon's life.
Family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made either to the "Dr. Gertrude Sibley Billard Scholarship Fund, in memory of Leon Eakes," at the University Advancement Department at U.O.P., 3601 Pacific Ave., Stockton, CA 95211 or to the Hospice of San Joaquin, 3888 Pacific Ave., Stockton, CA 95204.
