Stockton, CA
Luther Earl Harrell
Sept. 16, 1950 - November 30, 2007
Luther Earl Harrell "Lou" was born to Luther and Mattie Harrell on September 16, 1950. He was a lifelong native of Stockton, CA. Luther was a constant help-mate for his grandmother, Lucille Adger, who was blind. His nurtur-ing and compassionate spirit grew as he was dedicated to servicing his mother's needs. He loved and treasured family values. Maintaining a "B" average, Luther was educated at McKinley Elementary, Marshall Jr. High and Edison High Schools. He majored in Business and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from San Joaquin Delta College. Luther truly enjoyed his career. He was employed for 30 years with the San Joaquin County Human Services Department.
As a youth, he worked at Project Identity and had a newspaper route for the Stockton record. His work ethics were trained early as he labored with his brothers in vegetable fields. Luther had a passion for music. As a youth, he played the alto saxophone in the marching pep and advanced bands. He helped organize the musical group, "The Grand Prix" and continental bands. They toured as a backup band for The Ballads, The Whispers, Etta James and others. He was an avid tennis player. His best friend, Bernard Missouri, was his greatest competition. He was a master chess player and loved to decorate his beautiful home for the holidays. He exemplified the meaning of "Mr. Cool" and was meticulous in his suits and natural grey afro."Lou" was on everybody's guest list. His mother says, "He was a gourmet cook and cooked ribs so good it will make you slap 'yo mama! Upon retiring, Luther planned to continue perfecting his culinary talents and go fishing a lot. One of Luther's proudest moments in life was the dedication of the neighborhood park named for his mother, Mattie Harrell,
Preceding Luther in death were his grandparents, Sam and Lucile Adger and Elrena Harrell and his bother, Bruce Harrell. He leaves to cherish his memory: his parents, Luther and Mattie Smith-Harrell; two sisters, Velma Harrell, Sacramento, CA and Connie Harrell, Stockton, CA; four brothers, Raymond Williams (Cozette) and Anthony Harrell, both of Stockton, CA, Wayne Harrell (Lisa) Pittsburg, CA and Hulen Harrell, Oakland, CA, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. His memory will live in the hearts of his family, friends and co-workers.
Services will be held Friday, December 7, 2007, 12 noon at Scottish Rite Temple, 33 W. Alpine Ave., Stockton, CA 95204.
Final resting place, Stockton Rural Cemetery. Repass immediately following burial service, the Brick House, 30 S. El Dorado St., Stockton, CA.

In My Pocket
I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.
My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.
They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.
Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.
But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Words cannot even begin to express the sadness that I feel for the family and friends of Luther Harrell. My thoughts and prayers are with them all and I hope that when sadness creeps into their hearts that they will be able to remember all the love that was in the Scottish Rites Temple on 12/07/07 and it will bring them solace.
He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word and I will always remember him.

My prayers and blessings to the Harrell family. I met Luther back in the early 70's and he made an impression on me that has and never will leave me. Luther ALWAYS had a profound effect on my entire being as a person, he always had the time to stop and talk, asking how things were and flash that beautiful smile. Luther will forever be a Stockton Icon in my eyes and missed deeply, but never forgoten

To the family and friends of Luther, this man was extraordinary ... a man with integrity like no other ... I worked with him at the Human Services Agency ... he was my first supervisor, my co-worker, my friend ... he will be missed like no other ... he was always upbeat and full of life ... nothing can take away the feelings of loss ... but we can all be thankful for what he brought to our lives ... Luther, Luther, Luther, can't believe you left without saying good bye. It was great working with you at HSA. I can still remember how proud you were of me working on the 5th flr - won't say why but you know why and how proud you were of me when I left to work at CAO. I will miss driving on Pershing Avenue, feeling someone looking at me as I turned right, it would be you. You were such a smooth cat. And your calogne was everlasting.

Mr. Luther Harrell is a extended family member of the community, who was very different and unique in more ways than others.
Mr. Harrell's legacy as a person is in tack, for he was a person who nevr comprised who and what he was all about.
His works in the community may have not been in view for the general public to see, but the impact of his life in giving has blessed those throughout who are beneficiary of his sacrificial offerings.
Mr. Luther Harrell as a part of the extended community family willbe very much by me, including others who shared in growing up with and maintain life long friendship that secured a bond that one is able to treasure for life and carry over through eternity.
Father & Mother Harrell & siblings, thank you for what you have instilled as a family that is one again of uniqueness without compromise in a system (society)that offer less of.
GOD Bless the life of brother Luther Harrell that was with meaning, purpose & and love of life.
