Margret Smallie Obituary

Margret Lloyds Smallie

June 5, 1930 - May 16, 2018

Margret Ellen Lloyds Smallie went to be with our Heavenly Father on May 16, 2018 at age 87 with family by her side in Lodi Memorial Hospital. She was born in Cologne, Germany on June 5, 1930 to Hans and Liesel Cahen-Leudesdorff.

At age 7, her lifestyle, which included a loving governess, 2 maids, a cook, a chauffer and a gardener, was stripped when the Nazis took the family fortune.

She and her family were separated and had to live in different European countries for a couple years with strangers until their immediate family was reunited and were able to flee to San Francisco on the last ship out of Holland before the embargo in 1940. Her relatives were not as fortunate as she, but her cousin, Ellen Baer, was reunited with Margret after the war and became part of her immediate family as a sister.

As a teen, Margret performed in many ballet performances including Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty as a member of the San Francisco Ballet Company. She was a lifetime member of the Cecchetti Council of America which included teaching the Cecchetti syllabus of ballet to her students and their children at her Ballet Studio of Margret Lloyds Smallie in Stockton, Ca. for 58 years until the age of 84.

For numerous years she assisted her good friend, Dorothy Percival, with the San Joaquin Ballet Company in the Nutcracker performances with choreographing and teaching. Margret was a Girl Scout Leader of the San Joaquin Del Oro Girl Scout troops for many years. In 2014, she was honored at the Stockton Arts Commission 34th Arts Award ceremony and received an honorary award for teaching 58 years in Stockton.

She was married to the late Dr. Paul Smallie, D.C., for 49 years and is survived by her 3 children: Marlies "Mitzie" Traynor (Steve); Dr. Don Smallie, D.C., Dennis Smallie (Lisa); her 11 grandchildren: Korrie Bono, Garret (Haylee) Schaefer, Stephanie (Jason) Davidson, Lexi Benninghofen, Holly Smallie, Daniel (Lillie) Smallie, Paul Smallie, Greg (Misty) Oliver, Michael Oliver, and Blake Smallie; and 11 great grandchildren; sister Ellen Baer; nieces and nephews: Vivian Morgan, Bob Kahn, Steve Frank, Carol Hannon, Leana Baer, Denise Silicani, Bob Smallie and Jim Freeman. She is preceded in death by her sisters, Inge Kahn and Marlies Frank, and her grandson, John Weeks.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Oshtory, Dr. Laviola, Dr. Yee, Daniel Wolcott and his staff at Lodi Memorial Hospital including the doctors of ICU, the staff at Brookdale Lodi and her caretakers for the last year, Homer and Elfie Lolin. She will be missed dearly by all that loved her.

A Celebration of Life is set for Vineyard Chapel, 14165 N. Beckman, Lodi, Cherokee Memorial Cemetery on June 9, 2018, 1 p.m. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the Margret Lloyds Smallie Ballet Scholarship, West Coast Committee Cecchetti Council of America, 1545 Locust Drive, Tracy, CA 95376.

Mrs Smallie was my first ballet instructor and then again with the San Joaquin ballet company. She was always so sweet and very dedicated to teaching so many children. I have such wonderful memories of those years. Sending my condolences to her family. She was very much loved by so many ballet families.
Fondly,
