Marvin Wong Obituary

Hillsboro, CA

Marvin Lester Wong

May 18, 1955 - October 5, 2009

Marvin Wong was born on May 18, 1955 in Stockton, California and died peacefully at home on October 5, 2009. He was the beloved husband of Brenda, proud father to Collin, Quincey and Carson, loving son of Lillian Wong, devoted brother to Judy, Lucille, Teresa, Robert and brother-in-law to Cindy, Pierina and Frank. He was preceded in death by his father Jim and his brother, Jenkin.

Marvin was a kind, gentle and dependable family man who loved watching his kids play soccer on the weekends. His passions included photography (especially of his kids' sporting events), action/ James Bond movies, Cal football games and road trips. He was a master at the barbeque and deep fryer and famous for his slow cooked ribs, grilled steaks, deep fried turkey and tempura dinners. Last summer, he accomplished one of his life's dreams by taking his family on a road trip to the Southwest which included a helicopter ride through the Grand Canyons, the caves of Bandelier National Park and family photos at the corner of the Eagles' "Winslow, Arizona". He loved spending time on the golf course with his pals. Marvin was always trying to improve his golf swing, on the course as well as in the kitchen and the family room when he could find a spare moment.

Marvin was a graduate of the University of the Pacific and the University of the Pacific Dental School. He practiced as a dentist in Sunnyvale.

The family would like to thank all the family and friends who have given us so much support and love during this difficult time.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate his life at a memorial service to be held on Tuesday, October 13th at 2:00 p.m., Peninsula Covenant Church, 3560 Farm Hill Boulevard, Redwood City. A private family service and burial will precede the memorial service. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Marvin may contribute to the American Heart Association.

Hey Cousin,

It has been 12 years. Was just looking at a picture of you, cousin Frank, my dad and I playing golf. It is hard to believe all of you are gone. I then saw a picture of you and my dad in your offices at 291 Geary. I never made it to your funeral as the airport delayed me 3 hours that day. I just want you to know that as your mom watched my dad and my dad ushered you into the dental industry, we keep an eye on your kids. In 2019, I found myself going home from work on a bus and we passed by 291 Geary. She never knew about that office but it was a moment in time and I suddenly realized that I was the same age you were at your death. 10 years younger than you, I always wanted to be like my cool older cousin washing his Porsche. . You are gone but not forgotten

Just today I came to find out of Dr. Marvin Wong's passing. Dr. Wong was my dentist(THE BEST) for almost 20 years and I will greatly miss him. I really felt I great emptiness today as I sat in my usual examination chair in which I used to sit and talk to Dr. Wong about my latest trips, school, and just life. I will always remember such a great, genuine person. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and children.

I came to know about the news only today(Feb) after many months. We have been a patient of Dr Wong for 13 years. We were so happy with his services and was always very professional in his recommendation of what dental work need to be done without any unnecessary recommendations. Our family is shocked to hear this and will definitely miss him.

I was so shocked and saddened when I heard the news of Marvin’s passing.
My friend Ken recommended me to Marvin over 10 years ago. Ever since then, I became his patient and loved it. I could never bear the thought of ever leaving him for another dentist, even if I moved out of CA one time. Twice a year, I would always be looking forward to the clean up. I loved chatting with him and enjoyed exchanging our stories.
Marvin is one of the most genuine and loving person I have ever known. He will always hold a special place in my heart.
My Condolences to the Wong family.

Just in town this weekend to see a friend's sons high school football game. Long time friend Bob Podesto told me of Marvin's passing which really shocked me. I knew Marvin from his older brother Jenkin who was a high school and college friend. I use to alway kid Jenkin who was both a Cal and USC grad like myself about how USC dominated Cal with mixed emotions for me since I grew up watching Cal games. Didn't know Marvin well but he was always friendly with a great smile when he, his brother and I would talk about sports and cars growing up. My deep sympathy to his family and his mother Mrs. Wong. Like Jenkin, gone too early.

Though we are overtly sad that Marvin is gone, we are so very fortunate that he graced our lives and those of so many others. He was an engaging friend, doting father and great partner. We'll miss his voice, warmth and that special smile. He will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Brenda, Quincey, Collin and Carson, find comfort in all these beautiful messages.

I was very saddened and stunned to hear of Marvin's death. He had been my dentist for 20 years. During that time I kept moving further and further from his office, but I couldn't bring myself to seek a closer replacement to the best dentist I've ever had. He had a delicate touch and a friendly smile, and he took the time to get to know his patients. I always looked forward to sharing stories with him about our trips, and over the years he gave me many ideas for my trips.

I shall miss him very much.

My condolences to his family.

I was deeply saddened to hear that Marvin had passed away. He was my dentist for over 20 years and my last appointment with him was Sept. 18. We struck up the usual conversation about the Cal Bears being 2-0 and headed for the Rose Bowl and about our summer vacations.

I actually looked forward to going to the dentist as I considered him more of a friend than a dentist. It gave me a chance to catch up with a friend on what happened over the last 6 months.

I'm really going to miss him. My condolences to the Wong family.

I was very saddened and shocked to read online that Marvin has passed away. I was trying to download his picture last night which I read the news. He was my roommate at UC Berkeley when we lived in Dormitory. He was a very nice, kind and understanding person. I never forget his pleasant smile. He was the kind of person that people could easily talk to when they had a problem and get his advice and sympathy. He will always be remembered in our memories. My Condolences to his Family.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of our good friend Marvin. It was not long ago that we played golf together and for years, met up for our annual golf "road trip". It was always a highlight of the summer getting together with the "boys" and then as we got older, the families. Through our golfing adventures, our circle of friends grew. Before long, the golf trips turned into 3 generations... our parents, our wives, and our children. Golf was the entertainment but it was our lasting friendship that got us together year after year, even after we moved to the East Coast. Brenda, our thoughts and prayers are with you, Collin, Quincey, and Carson.

I was very saddened and shocked to hear the news of Dr. Wong's passing. He was my dentist for 20 years and always had the time to tell a personal story and to listen to mine. His last story was about his family's Southwestern trip and how much they enjoyed it.
My heartfelt condolences to the Wong family.

I was deeply saddened; having heard from my mother, by the news of our cousin Marvin and his untimely passing.

I remember fondly the years of our youth doing what kids do best, being boys, and just hanging out. From a game of tennis to a round of golf, swimming or just cruising about town together, we shared many good times. Marvin will be missed, the memories never forgotten.

My sincere condolences go out to the entire Wong family. May the thoughts and prayers of family and friends provide some comfort through this time.

It was a great experience to have worked with Dr. Marvin Wong. Not only he was a great boss, but he also became a wonderful friend and mentor. The rest of the staff and I will never forget the good times that we were able to share with him during the past years...I am very saddened about his passing and the workplace will never be the same without him there...My condolences go out to the Wong Family.

A prayer for Dr. Wong:
Lord,
Dr. Marvin Wong is gone now from this earthly dwelling,
and has left behind those who mourn his absence.
Grant that we may hold his memory dear,
never bitter for what we have lost
nor in regret for the past,
but always in hope of the eternal kingdom
where you will bring us together again.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

I moved to Mountain View from Phoenix in 1987 and was so fortunate to find Dr. Wong the following year. During our last conversation, he was excited about leaving to explor the Southwest early the following morning. And so, I offer this Puelbo verse in bitter sweet memory of our last visit:

Hold on to what is good even if it is a handful of earth.
Hold on to what you believe even if it is a tree which stands by itself.
Hold on to what you must do even if it is a long way from here.
Hold on to life even if it is easier letting go.
Hold on to my hand even when I have gone away from you.

I found out about Dr. Wong's passing yesterday. I am currently across the country in Philly for medical school and was deeply saddened by the news. My entire family has had Dr Wong as a dentist for nearly 2 decades. He was my first and only dentist and he was always like family. I remember visiting him every few months for check-ups and being able to update him on my life, from my summer vacations to Disneyland, all the way to my decision to enter medical school. In fact, Dr Wong's patience, kindness, and knowledge as a dentist inspired me to make this choice. My prayers go out to Dr Wong's family. May you guys find strength in knowing that Marvin was a fantastic doctor, and a kindhearted man who touched all those who he cared for.

I am very sorry to read of Marvin's passing. I knew Marvin at Stagg HS and he was one of the kindest people. It was also fun to see him while he worked at his high school job at Baskin-Robbins on the Miracle Mile or when he'd drive up to the student parking lot in his cool Mustang . My condolences to the Wong family

We are deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Wong's passing. He was an extremely kind and honest man who was an wonderful encouragement in fearful times. As a child I used to fear my dentist, but thanks to Dr. Wong's warmth and gentleness I take better care of my teeth and even moreso value integrity and honesty. I saw him living honorably even in tough times and that spoke volumes to me. Marvin really made a positive impact in my life, even with just being a patient I feel he lifted my countenance and encouraged me to be strong. I will always remember that tap on the arm when Dr. Wong told me "Don't use too much muscle on your teeth now." I think I responded with, I'll be good because I don't want to end up with Tic-tacs for teeth in my old age. We will miss you! Brenda and all you are in our prayers.

All of us were so sadden to hear the news about Marvin's passing. He will always be remembered as a kind and gentle man who was always there for his family and his community. Life can be busy and when it ends, it reminds us how precious it is. My times with him on a golf course was so comfortable and serene. Marvin had the knack of making such a frustrating game so peaceful and fun, with his quietness and dry wit. Marvin will be missed very much. As a patient of his, he made it actually enjoyable to do my 6 month visits. I wished we could of spent more time with each other on the golf course and at sporting events. God Bless Marvin's family the comfort of his love.
