Stockton, CA
Michael J. "Miguel" Herrera Jr.
July 1, 1959 - April 2, 2008
Miguel made his transition at the age of 48 in a San Francisco hospital. He lived his entire life in Stockton where he was born. He graduated from Edison High School. He is preceded in death by his Mother and Father, Gloria and Miguel Herrera, Sr. In June of 1978 Miguel married his first and only true love, Maria. They had two sons, Michael III and Albert. As a very young boy, Miguel would work with his father downtown at El Burrito in the Mariani's Shopping Center. In 1977 his father opened Miguel's Restaurant at 7555 Pacific Avenue. In 1990 he turned the business over to his son and daughter-in-law, Miguel and Maria to continue on to date as owner/operator of the restaurant.
Family and friends refer to Miguel as "the best Mexican Cook in Stockton." He realized his dream of expanding the restaurant when he recently opened Miguel's Bar and Banquet Room. Miguel was a true "giver" in every sense of the word. He freely and abundantly gave his love and time to the community. He sponsored several baseball leagues, and donated food for numerous fund raisers. In recent years his greatest efforts were spent on raising funds for Hospice House of San Joaquin. He never said "no" when there was a need he could help fill.
To those who knew and loved him, he will always be remembered as a kind, generous, loyal and compassionate man. It is difficult to say "goodbye" to such a great little guy. He has been described as five foot tall in stature, with a ten foot heart. Miguel was a die-hard 49er fan, a Giant's fan, and passionate about his trips to Reno, where Black Jack was his game. He was a member of the Stockton Optimist Club, the Elk's Lodge, The Moose Lodge and past member of the Stockton Rod & Gun Club. Miguel loved music, loved to dance, and had a desire to be "part of Ralph's band." He cherished time at home with his family, their two Lhasa Apsos, Maxie and Roxi, and The Cats. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. There is some comfort in knowing that Miguel is now spending "Prime Time" with the angels. You can almost hear him saying, "That's what I'm talkin' about."
He is survived by his loving wife of thirty years, Maria. His two sons, Michael III, and Albert. His sisters, Christina Herrera of Monterey, CA. Tita Herrera of Napa, CA and Gloria Ann Magana of Ceres, CA. Numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. His invaluable Compadres, Augie and Javier. His faithful, dedicated employees, and a host of friends.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 8, 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Rosary at 6:00 p.m. at DeYoungs Shoreline Chapel, 7676 Shoreline. Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, April 9, 10:00 a.m. at Church of the Presentation, 1515 W. Benjamin Holt Drive. Presider, Msgr. Harmon Skillin. Interment following service at San Joaquin Catholic Cemetery, 719 Harding Way. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests honoring Miguel with donations to Hospice of San Joaquin, 3888 Pacific Avenue, Stockton , CA 95204.

To the Herrera Family,
Miguel's is my daughter's favorite restaurant and she's practically a regular to the extent that the staff know her by site. Perhaps a year ago Miguel gave her an autographed football. I'm not much of a sports fan by my daughter likes the 49ers and Sacramento Kings. She was wearing a 49ers jacket and ended up with this football. She loved it and still displays it on a shelf in her room. I didn't know Miguel except by sight in his business but what he did for my daughter told me everything I had to know about the man. Miguel will be missed any our condolences to the Herrera family.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Maria, Michael & Albert,
I want to express my sorrow for your loss of such a special person as Miguel. I met him when we both were much younger - his dad was a delivery driver for Pre-Peeled and I worked in the plant. As time went on and his dad opened Miguel's we actually say more of each other and Miguel then took over the restaurant from his dad. I had seen him grow up and assume resposibility of the business. His father was sure proud of him and I always felt he expressed the same attitude and commitment to people as his dad. I will miss another generation of "Miguel" but they are both in heaven's kitchen making sure things are right.

Dear Maria,
The girls at workout will help carry you through this difficult time. Even though Miguel's life was short it seemed very full of friends, family, and good times. I hope all of these happy memories embrace you with the warmth you need now. You are such a sweetie and I am here for you if you need anything. Even if it is just an ear to listen. Big hugs, Claudia

Be Still
Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.
Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.
If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

Maria, Mike jr and Albert, We still can not believe we are here writing in a guest book for cousin Michael. Our thoughts and prayers are with you cousins. We have been remembering all the good times, camping, boating, A's games, parties, and Joe's favorites, hunting and playing pool with cousin Mike. Even tho Mike would run the table most of the time. It is hard to believe we are walking into "MIGUELS" and not going to see cousin Mike sitting there. We all know he is at peace and that is what matters but we will miss him forever. God placed a piece of heaven here on earth and blessed us with his laughter, and eternal memories that will forever grow in our hearts.
Although we weren’t’ ready to see his wings spread, we knew he was ready for his eternal life to begin.
Heaven couldn’t have blessed us more then to know him as a husband, a father an uncle a god father a friend, my God Father (our angel)
Forever his laughter will be heard, forever our hearts will beat with his, and if tears could build a stairway to heaven, we know we’ll be graced in his presence again.
In our heart we couldn’t have asked for more, then to know he once stood by our side.
And as they say; he’s that whisper in the wind, that imaginary friend, that shadow on the ground, and he’ll be until the end, for our hearts will be sure to carry him every step of the way.
Miguel Herrera the third and angel GOD was missing for 48 years is now home watching over with his parents Miguel Herrera the second and his mother Gloria.
My condolence to his wife and kids. My cousins, and God Mother. May his laughter and happiness be seen threw your hearts. He will be forever missed.

I just learned of the news today and my heart goes out to Mike's family. Miguel's was my 1st place of employment and I had the pleasure of working for Miguel and then Michael and Maria. They are OUTSTANDING people and true to the article very generous. I want to say how sorry I am to hear of this and I'm so sorry that I didn't have a chance to see Michael before he passed on. Michael made a difference in this world, not many people will be missed like Mike.

I was very saddened to see that Mike, at only 48, had left us, and my heart is heavy. I bowled in the same league with him for several years. He was well liked by all who knew him and it was always a treat whenever he brought along a huge container of tasty burritos to be shared by his fellow bowlers. I enjoy eating at Miguel's and whenever we came in for a meal, he always brought out a tempting "appetizer" to get our dining experience started. God bless that man and his family.

For years, Miguel, Maria and the rest of their family have made us part of their family, every time we see them. Our daughter has grown up with "Chips n Salsa" (as she calls the restaurant). God Bless!
