Norma Paust Nicolaysen
October 27, 1926 - May 8, 2008
Norma Nicolaysen, of Stockton, CA, age 81, passed away on Thursday, May 8th, in the Meadowood Nursing Facility. Norma was born in Brooklyn, NY to Ragnar and Borghild Paust, both immigrants from Norway. Norma graduated from Fort Hamilton High School in 1944, and married Arne Haakon Nicolaysen, also a Norwegian immigrant a few months later.
She was a devoted mother to her three children, Carol Nicolaysen of Brooklyn, NY; Richard Nicolaysen of Brewster, NY; and Sylvia Nicolaysen Maffucci of Stockton, CA. She spent almost 15 years as a volunteer in the prayer fellowship for the Guideposts Magazine in Carmel, NY. Norma was especially proud of her four grandchildren, Michael Nicolaysen of Brewster, NY; Eric Nicolaysen of Seattle, WA; Alison Maffucci of Stockton, CA; and Amanda Maffucci of Stockton, CA.
Upon the death of her husband of 56 years, Norma moved to the O'Connor Woods Retirement Community in Stockton, CA. She immediately began volunteering at St. Joseph's Hospital in the Cancer support department. She also volunteered at the Quail Lakes Baptist Church as a greeter, part of the pew crew, and in the women's missionary fellowship. She especially enjoyed the Ambassador's Sunday School class, from which she gained a lot of love, friendship, prayer support, and laughter. Norma served on many committees at O'Connor Woods. She loved to be a regular part of the fashion shows, a leader in the Red Hat Society, and the building coordinator for special events. Many of the O'Connor Woods employees remember her outgoing, vivacious spirit. Norma was a strong women who always enjoyed a good laugh, good company, good food, and good travels with her family.
Norma's family would like to extend a special prayer of thanks to the many loving nurses and caregivers of the Meadowood Nursing Facility. She knew you and loved you and appreciated all you did to make her last few days comfortable.
A Memorial Service of Celebration will be held at Quail Lakes Baptist Church, at 1904 Quail Lakes Drive, Stockton, on Monday, May 12th at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary, with a luncheon reception following in the chapel. Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be made to Quail Lakes Baptist Church Foundation.
