Todd Gabrielson Obituary

Stockton, CA

Todd Reed Gabrielson

Oct. 29, 1958 - Feb. 14, 2010

Todd Reed Gabrielson passed away suddenly on February 14, 2010, at the age of 51. He was born October 29, 1958, in Fargo, ND, and moved to Lodi with his parents in 1960 and spent his entire life in the Lodi/Stockton area. Numerous surgeries due to complications from Cerebral Palsy confined Todd to a wheelchair at age 5. He was an avid reader, had an inquisitive mind and a keen memory. He attended St. Peter's Lutheran School and Lodi High.

As a Freshman, Todd earned a 4.0 GPA in all honors classes until a major surgery left him in a full body cast. He returned the following year and graduated with his class in 1977. In spite of constant pain, Todd was well known for his big smile, infectious laugh and quick wit. His friendliness and participation earned him a "Congeniality" Award his senior year.

Todd attended Delta College, obtaining an AA Degree. In spite of many setbacks during his lifetime, Todd rallied through with strong determination to remain as independent as possible. He loved sports, movies, family gatherings and interaction with people. His ready smile greeted movie-goers at the West Lane Theatre in Stockton, where he was employed as a ticket taker for the past thirteen years.

Todd is survived by his parents, Curt and Bev Gabrielson; his sister, Tori Hylton and brother-in-law Doug Hylton; and nephews, Reese and Grant. He also leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who loved him. Those who knew Todd will never forget the life lessons learned from this courageous young man.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 701 South Pleasant Ave., Lodi, CA, 95240 on Friday, February 19, 2010 at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2425 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95817 or United Cerebral Palsy, 333 West Benjamin Holt Drive, Suite 1, Stockton, CA 95207.

"Dear Tori and Family, Bev and Curt,
I'm very sorry to hear about the sad and unexpected loss of Todd. I can't imagine what it would be like to loose a brother or a sister, or a son. I love you all. The pain does not go away, but softens and changes how we 'feel' about our losses and acknowledges the 'GIFTS' we have been given. This is God's gift to us in time.

Mom (Dar) feels your loss and sends her love.

Love is forever and transcends dimensions.

Dear Bev& Curt,
We were so sorry to get the call about Todd. We know he has been such a "special" person in your lives & the lives of many others! We remember well when we heard of his birth, only 10 days after our Barb. A "special" memory I have of Todd is at Tori & Doug's wedding. Tori was dancing with Todd in his wheelchair & they were both having so much fun - smiling-laughing & glowing, both so happy & proud! As you said, Bev, he is in a "special" place now - with Grandma Herfindahl on one side & Jesus on the other! He will leave a real void in your lives, but knowing he is whole, happy & free of pain is a comfort. You are all in our thoughts & prayers during this very difficult time.
With love & hugs,
Ron, Carolyn & family Fargo, ND

Dear Curt, Bev, and Tori,

I just wanted you to know I will never forget Todd and all the fun times we spent together as kids. His smile and infectious laugh made everyone around him giggle, especially when we played cards.

When life has seemed too difficult or the challenges too great, I have thought of my cousin Todd. His smiles and perseverarnce have helped me keep on trying, and they always will.

Myron, Garrett, and I want you to know we are thinking of you all now.

I remember being in journalism with Todd and he was a riot! He was always cracking jokes and had a smile for everyone.
I invited him to a Holloween Party and I remember when he arrived as a Mummy completley wrapped from head to toe. I mean COMPLETELY. We had to cut a hole for his mouth so he could enjoy the food and drink. We split into teams and had a scavenger hunt (which was very competitive). One of our other guy guests took the handles on Todds chair and away they went. They took the corners on two weels and Todd was roaring with laughter. They were on the winning team and came back with time to spare.
I am so sorry to learn of his passing from this life, but I know he is completely healed and living large in Heaven.

Dear Gabrielson family,
I am very saddened to have just learned of Todd's death. I met Todd while we were both at Sac State many years ago.
As others have stated, I, too, will always remember his big smile that he flashed so often. I can also say that I honestly don't ever recall hearing Todd complain of his condition. Life is what we make it and he seemed to enjoy life very much. I learned from him much about adversity and gained a new perspective on what people with disabilities deal with day to day. And, again, he did so without complaint.
Now that Todd is free of pain and all that confined him, I pray that you can find comfort in this despite the sadness you may feel. And I hope he's smiling bigger than ever.

February 19, 2010

Please accept my heartfelt sympathy for your loss. Cherish your many good memories and that wonderful smile. May God grant you the peace that excels all thoughts and guard your heart (Philip. 4:7). Your family and friends are in my prayers.

February 19, 2010

We are so sorry to hear about Todd's sudden death. What a handsome, determined fellow with the world's greatest smile.
I remember so well when he was born. Joanie K. and I couldn't wait to get to the hospital to see both Todd and his mother. We had to wait quite awhile to hold him because! he was so little.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this difficult time.

February 18, 2010

Dear Bev & Curt,
God gives us children as blessings. With blessings come challenges. We do not know what the blessings or the challenges will be. How we face our challenges is what makes one an example and a blessing to others. Todd's life is an example of a happy spirit, courage, and a tenacity to live life to the fullest possible in spite of serious challenges. When our families first met, this happy 2 year old, with big brown eyes, infectious giggle, and huge smile captivated our hearts. As he grew to be an adult, he kept that big smile and hearty laugh through all the physical challenges he experienced. He laughed as he shared with us some of his exciting events when he moved to Stockton, like the time his wheelchair tipped over on the SJ Delta track, and he waved to people going by and they waved back instead of coming to his rescue.
We meet many people throughout our lives. The question is why do they come to us when they do? Two years later, our Gretchen was born in desperate condition prematurely causing her to have cerebral palsy. We knew what it was.
We will always think of Todd and how he adjusted to life, and the effect he had on others. He IS an example and a blessing. Our prayers and love are with you and your family.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Gabrielson and Hylton families. We will never forget Todd’s wonderful, infectious smile. I used to love going to baseball games with Todd to see the A’s play. Todd was a great, patient teacher and would teach me about things like a Suicide Squeeze and a Slap Bunt. He always seemed to know exactly what the players were going to attempt on the next play. We will greatly miss Todd.

As I understand it, God creates each of His children with different talents and gifts, then allows us the free will to develop and use them to glorify Him. The Todd I knew was blessed with enthusiasm, kindness, generosity, and a great zeal for life. Todd enthusiastically developed those gifts and touched countless lives, including mine. I appreciate the friendship, the memories, and the life lessons learned. Although this temporary world will definitely miss Todd's wonderful boistrous laugh, it is undoubtedly welcomed in heaven.

To Todd's family: Our deepest condolences. I was his counselor and remember his determination and positive outlook. Despite his limitations he attended school regularly and worked very hard. He was such an inspiration to all of his classmates and teachers. He earned an award as a senior for his great personality and inspiration to others. He was a shining light and I know his light will continue to shine. Now he can dance with my daughter Sheryl who was his classmate who passed away in 1993. She considered Todd a true friend.
