Diane Shafer Obituary

Walden, NY

Diane K. Shafer, 55, of Walden, NY, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday July 2, 2008 after a courageous battle with liver cancer. She entered each day with faith that everything was part of God's plan for her life.

Diane was born in Passaic, NJ to Karl and Margaret Kramer on May 15, 1953. She married Gerald R. Shafer on June 22, 1974.

She is survived by her parents of Wayne, NJ; her husband and best friend, Jerry; loving son, Jeremy R. Shafer of Rock Tavern; sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Richard Underhill of Wayne, NJ; brother and sister-in-law, Karl and Elizabeth Kramer of Arlington Heights,IL; mother-in-law, Jean Shafer of Montgomery; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bruce and Stephanie Shafer of Poughkeepsie; nieces Tracy and Melissa Underhill, Erica, Danielle, Amanda Shafer, and nephews, Adam and Ethan Kramer; several aunts and uncles, and cousins. In addition to family members, Diane is survived by her close friends, Carolann Brown of Montgomery, Maggie Hyland of Pine Bush, Rev. Paul and Marilyn Benes of High Falls, and Joe and Renee Schmidt of Montgomery. Also she is survived by her beloved cats, dogs, and cows that were truly the light of her life. Diane was a sixth grade teacher at the Crispell Middle School in Pine Bush since 1984 and truly was at her best when she was in front of her class. She served as a grade level chair, team leader, member of numerous committees at school, co-advisor of the Crispell Student Council, member of the Pine Bush Teachers Association, and faculty representative to the P.B.T.A. Prior to teaching she was employed by the Orange County Departments of Mental Health and Social Services as a caseworker. She graduated from Ramapo College of NJ and SUNY New Paltz where she earned her masters in Education degree. She was a member of the First Reformed Church, Walden since 1980 and loved every minute of her service to the Lord. Diane used her talents as a deacon, elder, and served as vice president of the consistory and was always willing to pitch in using her organizational skills where needed. Diane was a leader with the Orange County 4-H program and had served on the board of directors and as both a county coach for the Dairy Bowl and Dairy Discovery teams. She and Jerry owned Shamore Holsteins and she was a member in both the New York State and national Holstein Association. She loved to show her cows and calves at both local and regional shows during summer months and always approached her animals with kindness and love. After her courageous fight against cancer, she is and inspiration to us all.

Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday, July 6, at the Millspaugh Funeral Home, 22 Bank St. Walden, NY from 2-4 and from 7-9 p.m.

Dear Jerry and Jeremy,
May the Lord be with you during this time. Diane's courage and grace has deepened my faith in ways that words cannot express. 2 Timothy 4:7 says, " I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." Truly a verse that epitomizes Diane's battle. Rest assured that she has claimed her crown and that you WILL see her again. God Bless.

Dear Jerry & Jeremy,
I will always remember Diane with a great big grin- I'll remember the fun we had at a teacher's conference in Niagra Falls, with Pat Mataraza- she was a great and classy lady. It was an honor to work with her.I last saw her 2 years ago, when I was last in the area, and her will & determination to fight this was amazing. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Jerry and Jeremy -
I am saddened by the news of Diane's illness and passing. I will always remember her easy, helpful, demeanor and beautiful smile. I will also remember all the great times we spent in our 4-H Club and our cattle showing with all of our kids.
I bumped into her in the store about a year ago and we talked for a while to catch up. I never knew she was ill. You all are in my prayers and I know that there is a special place in heaven for Diane.
Love

TO DIANE'S FAMILY- When I walked through the doors of Crispell Middle School in 1988, I never dreamed I 'd still be teaching there in June, 2008. Diane and I began working together on the sixth grade in 1990, and we ended up back on the same team at the end of her career, and mine, two years ago. When Diane first told us of her diagnosis, and later on, her chances of survival, neither of us on the team doubted that Diane would fight this insidious disease to the end. And, indeed she did, with grace and dignity. We spent our hours each day alongside her; while she gave her students the very best she had. We took care that Diane was 'alright' as each day came and went The incredible Discovery Team- Nancy, Alison, Mike, Linda, myself, shared Diane's day to day fight because she trusted us, and knew we would support whatever she chose to do. She never asked for special cnsideration. She came in each day with a sense of humor about her experience, even modeling her wig for us one surprising morning. There wasn't a complaint, although we knew when she was in discomfort, or even worse, in pain. We knew it was her strong faith all along that carried her through. She reached her goal of retirement this year and came into school as often as she could..She was in her classroom ten days before passing away. Diane inspired each of us on the Discovery Team, and we want her family to be comforted in their loss knowing that everyone at Crispell Middle School, especially Maggie, my team mates, and certainly Deidra, that she was in good hands with us. Jerry and Jeremy our thoughts go out to each of you.

Sincerely,
Larry St. John- Teacher at Crispell Middle School

I met Diane on her first visit to the doctors office. She was full of fire and a will to fight. From that day on she and I had many conversations about nothing and everything. She never complained, but we enjoyed sharing personal stories. Every week I looked forward seeing her and finally having some intelligent conversations. What a fantastic person she was.
She will be missed.

This is truly a sad time for many people right now. Mrs.Shafer was my English and Math teacher when i was in 6th grade and she taught me so many things about life. Whether the lessons she taught us were about ourselves or life she always found a way to make them somewhat meaningful to each and every one of her students. I greatly appreciate everything she's done for me and i will cherish each and every one of them for the rest pf my life.
