Donald Maney Obituary

Donald C. Maney
November 4, 1936 - May 16, 2020
Goshen, NY
Donald C. Maney, a life-long resident of Goshen, died at home surrounded by his family on May 16, 2020 at the age of 83. Don was born in Goshen on November 4, 1936. He is the son of the late Clarence P. and Laura (Hornung) Maney.
He was a veteran of the United States Army. Don was a retired science teacher from North Junior High in Newburgh New York, but anyone who knew him knows his true love was horses. He was a genuine cowboy with a strong work ethic who loved, raised, bought, and sold horses his entire life. He owned a Saddle shop in Goshen for over 50 years.
He is survived by Karen Juckas who he was in a loving relationship with for the past 42 years. Don was a devoted family man, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
He is survived by his daughters, Robbielynn Maney and Lori Maney Lentini; his grandchildren: Brian Stevens, Matt Stevens, Nicole Lentini, and James Lentini. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Maney and his estranged wife, Carol Ann (Whitby) Maney. Don was blessed with a large extended family whom he loved including, Lance Juckas, Pam Juckas, Shanga Meono Juckas, Andrea Juckas, Onon Otgonbayer, Eric Lynds, Jean Buckley, his goddaughters, Shari Jenkins Roosa, Becki Maney and Colleen Kelly, and his nieces, nephews and cousins.
The true measure of a man is shown through his life's journey, in the lives he has enriched and the kindness he has given along the way. Whether you called him Dad, Da, Grandpa, Grandpa Don, Uncle Don, or just Don, as a friend or relative he could be relied upon to step up or step in to help and support you in way he could. Our lives will never be the same without him, but we are comforted by embracing the love and support he so generously gave to us every day of his life.
Don was one of a kind. A legend in his own right to many of us. He was a great man, mentor, teacher, businessman, and gentleman who lived his life in the service of others. Until we get to heaven and hear his distinct strong voice and laugh again, we are sure heaven is keeping him busy with an unlimited supply of books, red wine and horses.
A Celebration of Life Party will be announced and held later in the summer when social distancing regulations allow gatherings.
In honor of Don's memory the family asks that donations be made to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties.

Sending condolences to my family on my mom's side. Uncle Don was where I would go on weekend visits with my Aunt Anna. The smell of his tack shop will forever stay with me. I remember as a child getting on this big mean (I don't think we knew she was a brat yet) pony named Muffin. It was my first time horse back riding. Well Don had the lead at first and I was doing pretty well, and she was behaving. We were just walking around the enclosed ring. Suddenly Muffin decided she had enough of this kid on her back and boom! Up on her hind legs, then up on her front legs. Next thing you know I am having my first real rodeo experience! I just held on fro dear life. I didn't know what else to do and I don't like to lose. Don ran over as fast as he could because she couldn't get me off, and he saw that she was going to lay down. He ripped me off her just in the nick of time because that's exactly what she did. That's when I learned, he said he had his leg crushed that way once (At least that is how my 7 year old memory recalls). He was a good man, and I'm all the more grateful that I got to spend this past Thanksgiving with him and the rest of the Family...My love to everyone for their loss.

Dear Don,
Thank you for your service and generosity to your community. I have been in and out of your tack shop for decades...
You were always informative and helpful. Your kindness and support for organizations never went unnoticed.
I will always remember Barbara Harris bragging about the paint horse she bought from you and how much pleasure she had showing it. You kind spirit has touched many horses and people...
Happy trails for you are one of our last cowboys...
God bless you and your family,

Don will be missed, I taught science with him for 30 years. We got our first trailer from him and Paul. If youve got a trailer, you can always find a horse. It served several horses, as a moving van, and as the NJH Ski Club trailer. We are so fortunate to have had Don as a friend for so many years.

I got my first Thoroughbred from Don on a trade when I was 17. He remained a friend as I went through vet school and through my years in practice here in Orange county. He was a true icon of a gone by era in the horse community. He will be missed.

Listening to Don's stories of adventures with horses and horse people, was always a highlight for me when I visited with Karen and Jean (my sister) and Eric. I always learned some horse wisdom, talking with Don, what worked or what didn't work. As with most of us with horses, often he had experienced both, and would honestly admit it. One overnight ride I went on ( I rode Hotshot) Jean (on Shadow) and Eric (on Shetan), Karen and Don danced to the country music band there that night. Fun times! Bless you, Don!
My condolences to Karen, Don's daughters and family, and other friends

Don was always working and running the roads. Sorry to hear of his passing.
My family went to an auction and bought our first saddle from Don for our first horse. It was1969, I was 14 and Don also taught science to my younger sister Joyce at N Jr High school.
In some form or other Don along with Paul Congelosi and I, bought, sold or traded with each other right up to a year ago.
Don will be missed but never forgotten.

So sorry to hear of Dons passing through the years you could always go to his saddle shop to get what you needed or maybe sometimes just some advice it was always the best advice and I remember when people would approach me about purchasing a horse for their children I would always refer them to Don.
His honesty and knowledge was outstanding.
Rest in peace Don. He will be sadly missed.
