Edward Klein Obituary

Warwick, NY

Edward N. Klein of Warwick, passed away on October 18, 2008 at his home. He was 86 years old.

Born on June 11, 1922 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Julius and Helen (Frank) Klein. He was married to Phyllis (Bentzen) Klein for 61 years.

A World War II veteran, Klein served with the U.S. Army primarily in North Africa, Italy and France. After the war, he and his brother, Richard, started a chain of newspapers including The Home News in Oakhurst, NJ. In 1962, he moved his family to Warwick when he bought The Warwick Advertiser. In 1969, he started WTBQ radio station and founded the Warwick Cable Company in 1972. After that last business was ultimately purchased by Westinghouse Broadcasting, he became editor and publisher for The Group W News and later added Warner Cable to his corporate newspaper publications.

In 1986, he founded the Hudson Valley Business Journal, which he published until 2000, when it was sold. During that time he also added publications including Westchester and Fairfield County Business Journals to his company. Since his "retirement" from those papers, he was actively involved in publishing until his death. He was a featured columnist for both the Senior Gazette and The Hudson Valley Business Journal and created The Patriot, a newsletter for his beloved veterans of the Third Infantry Division.

He loved the Warwick community and received many awards, including "Man of the Year" from the Town of Greenwood Lake. In 1996, he published his entertaining autobiography "At Least Nobody's Shooting at Me." In September 2007, the Village and Town of Warwick and the County of Orange honored both Phyllis and Ed on the occasion of their 60th wedding anniversary with a special presentation at the Warwick Town Hall.

A family statement reads: "His passion for people, animals, his community and the country were obvious to everyone who knew him. He loved his family and friends and business associates who contributed so much to his life. He thoroughly enjoyed Broadway Shows, jazz, Big Band and Dixieland with this music providing the soundtrack for his life. His impact on the people of Warwick and the entire area will never be forgotten."

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Warwick; his children: Pip (Julie Ann) Klein and her husband, Robert Grawi of Florida, NY, Donald Klein and his wife, Judi Mauck of Marina Del Ray, CA, and Claudia Jane Klein Piper and her husband, George of Lake Worth, FL; his grandchildren: Nik Swanton of Baltimore, MD and Benjamin Julius Grawi of Florida, NY; great-grandchildren: Jesse Swanton and Matthew Swanton. He was predeceased by two brothers, both of New Jersey, Richard Klein and Lawrence Klein.

Visitation will be on Friday, October 24, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Ave., Warwick, NY. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Warwick Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Warwick Humane Society, which he was instrumental in founding with the late Gretchen Wyler.

I was so sorry to hear that Eddie has passed on. I've known you all since I was in 5th grade... and wrote articles for the Home News when I was in scouts. Phyllis was my first scout leader and I also met Don when I was in 5th grade. He told me about the death. Needless to say my thoughts and prayers are with you and I cherish my memories. The miles may keep us apart but the memories keep us close. May God be with you during these days and always... With great love, Rosemarie from Oakhurst

Dear Klein Family,
I was sorry to read of Ed's passing when I went on line a few minutes ago. I worked with Ed at Group W Cable and we continued to touch bases when Ed published the Hudson Valley Business Journals. I enjoyed our conversations about his service time in the Army and his entrepreneurial ventures. He was an intelligent, warm caring friend. I remember attending his 60th birthday party in 1982. He will be greatly missed.

Phyllis & Family:
My most sincere sympathy on Ed's death - he was always larger than life. How well I remember working with him on the "countywide" cable programs that benefited our beloved Orange County Cerebral Palsy Center (now Inspire). I will always remember him with much kindness. He was a legend that we all loved.

Fondly, Pat Gilchrest

Our love and blessings to Phyllis and Pip. Ed was such a good friend to my Dad and gave him a second chance. We are forever grateful. I might be the only family member who didn't work for Ed. The Kleins are special to all of us Martins.

I am sad to miss the service, which no doubt will be full of friends and memories of one of Warwick's greatest men ever.

All our love, Jeff and Liz

I will never forget publication days at the Advertiser (yes, I was Sue d'Nim), Ed's special kindness to my father the last year of his life, and all the fun the Kleins, the Emmerichs and the Martins had together for many years.

Phyllis: My deepest sympathy to you and your family. When I was with O&R, we were always running into each other at all the ounty "events." ...and, quite often in
Dr. Umphey's office in Port Jervis. He was, indeed, a raconteur! After almost 15 years in retirement, there are those you never forget...and he certainly was one I'll always remember with great affection.

Dear Klein family,

I was a youngster in High School when Ed and Phyllis came to Warwick. I always enjoyed having spirited conversations with Ed and always have had the highest regard for him and what he contributed to our community. I have been away from the area off and on for many years but when I came to town, I always looked over to the home on Maple Ave and thought fondly of Mr. and Mrs. Klein.

May God bless the family
