George R. Schneider

George T. Schneider a.k.a. "Grandpa George" and "Poppy", 91, nearly a lifelong resident of New Paltz, N.Y., died Monday, May 7, 2007 in St. Francis Hospital.

He was born in White Plains, N.Y. on January 17, 1916 to the late Richard Schneider and Mabel Medlar.

He worked as an Electrical Maintenance Engineer at IBM, East Fishkill, N.Y. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a former New Paltz Town Councilman, and former President of the Mike Moriello Park Association. Former Director of the New Paltz Walk-A-Thon for world hunger. Volunteer at Family of New Paltz, and as well as countless other civic organizations. Sunday School Teacher at New Paltz United Methodist Church. He was a private pilot. He was a former Boy Scout Leader.

He married Guthrun "Bibi" Bergmann on November 27, 1948 in Reykjavik, Iceland. She passed away on April 6, 1990.

Survivors include, daughters, Helen Hanna Hansen of Gardiner, N.Y. and Evelyn Schneider of Gardiner, N.Y.; son, Ronald and wife, Laurie Schneider of New Paltz, N.Y.; sister, Doris Weich of Willamantic, Conn.; grandchildren, Brett Eric Hansen of Rosendale, N.Y, Leanna Chapman of Gardiner, N.Y., Heather Croce of New Paltz, N.Y., Jennifer Pizzarello of New Paltz, N.Y., Richard George Croce of Saugerties, N.Y., Brian Schneider of New Paltz, N.Y., Maegan Schenker of Connelly, N.Y., Max Schneider of New Paltz, N.Y.; great grandchildren, William, Robyn, Violet, Melody, Kayla, Shaelyn, Samantha, Marissa, Benjamin, Paul, Tavi, and Lyric. He was predeceased by, wife, Guthrun "Bibi "Bergmann; brothers, Rexford Schneider and Stanley Schneider; and sister, Marion Brown.

Calling hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, May 10, 2007 and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, May 11 at Copeland Funeral Home, Inc., 162 South Putt Corners Road, New Paltz, N.Y.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 19 at the New Paltz United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dorothy Caldwell officiating. He will be cremated and his ashes placed at Lloyd Cemetery, Plutarch's Black Creek Swamp, and Iceland.
