Harry Tompkins Obituary

Formerly of Livingston Manor, NY

Harry V. Tompkins of Drexel Hill, PA, formerly of Livingston Manor, NY, passed away on September 14, 2009 at the Broomall Rehabilitation and Nursing Center after a short illness.

The son of the late Vincent and Amelia Reiner Tompkins, he was born on October 17, 1922 in Livingston Manor, NY. He was the widower of Regina R. Glod Tompkins whom he married in 1947 and predeceased him in 1988.

Harry was a U.S. Navy Veteran who served our country during World War II. He served on the U.S.S. Philadelphia, a light cruiser known as "The Galloping Ghost" from December, 1941 to April, 1946.

He was employed at ARCO Refinery for 35 years as a shift electrician until his retirement in 1985.

He enjoyed gardening, playing dominoes and spending time with his grandchildren. He was also a self-taught musician who played ten instruments.

Harry is survived by his two daughters, Madeleine Perchalski and her husband, Ed of Drexel Hill, PA and Carol Gallagher and her husband, Dennis of Morton, PA; two sisters, Alice Hoos and Helen Tompkins, both of Livingston Manor; eight grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. An infant son, Dennis Vincent; two brothers, Raymond and Arthur Tompkins; two sisters, Mary Benton and Vivian Carlson, predeceased him.

A Memorial service for Harry will be held on Saturday, November 7, at 11 a.m. at the Livingston Manor Presbyterian Church, Rock Ave., Livingston Manor. Burial of ashes will be at sea.

Memorial contributions in Harry's name may be made to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, 1111 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage, NY 11714.
