John "Jack" D. Ruckdeschel, 84, of Cornwall, NY, died March 2, 2008 in Newburgh, NY.

Born in Montgomery, NY, he was the son of the late Robert and the late Myrtle (O'Dell) Ruckdeschel. Mr. Ruckdeschel married Naomi Krom for 62 years.

He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army and served in Battery A491st AAA AW Battalion, where he fought in Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland campaigns. He received five medals: Silver Service Star, American Service Medal, EAME Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. In his later years, he became very active in the VFW, Town of Newburgh.

As a young adult, he played semi pro football and Fast Pitch softball. He was inducted into the Fast Pitch Softball Hall of Fame in May, 2007. He was active in coaching Little League baseball, Pop Warner football and speed skating with the Newburgh Skating Club.

He was an installer, employed by New York Telephone.

Survivors include his wife, Naomi, at home; four daughters, Karen and Mansle Raines of South Carolina, Cheryl Ruckdeschel-Gomez of Kentucky, Karryl and Joseph Scilla of Marlboro, and Pam and Tim Gallagher of Walden; one son, Thomas and Gloria Ruckdeschel of Georgia; one sister, Ruth Ann and Cal Cosman of Marlboro; one brother, Donald and Mary Ruckdeschel of Newburgh; grandchildren: Larisa, Janette, Mark, Joey, Chelsea, Rachel, Nick, Keegan, Kyrstin and Megan; great-grandchildren. Forrest and Ella.

She was predeceased by son, John D. Ruckdeschel Jr.; grandson, Jason Ruckdeschel; brothers: Robert, Gordon and William, and one sister, Louise.

Friends may call at The DiDonato Funeral Home, 1290 Route 9W, Marlboro, NY, on Monday, March 24, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 25, at 11 a.m., with Pastor Evelyn McDonald officiating at the funeral home. Cremation will be at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations in John's name may be made to American Cancer Society, Hudson Valley Regional Office, 95 Schwenk Dr., Kingston, NY 12401.
