Joseph Scaturro Obituary
Joseph Anthony Scaturro, of Gold Key Lake, Milford, Pa., died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006 after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. He was 83.
He was born to the late Anthony and Michelena Scaturro on Oct. 15, 1922 and grew up in the Cypress Hills section of Brooklyn, where he lived until moving to Pennsylvania in 1971.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Alice Scaturro and three children, Joseph A. Scaturro Jr. and Barbara Scaturro of Manhattan and Richard Scaturro and wife April; two grandchildren, Christopher and Kenneth of Smithtown, N.Y.; one sister, Rose VanWyck and husband John of Clarksburg, N.J.; brother-in-law, Ron Springsteen and companion Lenore Stevens of Barefoot Bay, Fla.; sister-in-law, Doris Radtke and husband Robert of Summerfield, Fla. He was predeceased by one sister, Audenzia Springsteen.
He is also survived by his devoted nieces and nephews, Linda and Randall Blake and their children, Jesse and John of Howell, N.J., Michele and Don Lasko and their children, Kristy, Don and Jeff of Jackson, N.J., Ron and Sherry Springsteen and New Egypt, N.J., Denise and Paul Sousa of Sebastian, Fla., Robert and Jean Radtke and their children, Kim and Krisanne of Guilderland, N.Y., Chris and Gene Peters and their son Rob of Meadow Bridge, W.Va.
During WW II, he served in the Army in the Pacific Theatre from 1942-1946. Until moving to Pennsylvania, he owned and operated with his father, Scaturro and Son Barber and Beauty Supply. An active Lutheran Layman, he was part of the Elder/Deacon Program at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Cypress Hills and through the years, held many positions including Sunday School Superintendent, Bible Class Teacher and Member of the Church Council. He also served on the Board of Directors of Martin Luther High School, Maspeth, Queens and for many years was a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 251 in Brooklyn. After moving to PA he became a charter member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Dingman's Ferry, Pa. and served on the Church Council and on many different committees. From 1986-1989, he was the Lay Pastor of Grown of Glory Lutheran Church, Branchville, N.J. and returned to Holy Trinity in 1989 as Lay Assistant to the Pastor and Coordinator of the Church's Food Pantry. He retired in 1999.
A family statement reads, "He loved and served his God, his family and his church. He will be sadly missed."
Friends may call at the Stroyan Funeral Home, Inc., 405 W. Harford St., Milford, Pa. from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, February 17.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 18 at 2:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 16 Delaware Crest, Dingman's Ferry, Pa. The Rev. Niels Nielsen will officiate.
Burial will take place in Delaware Cemetery, Dingman's Ferry, Pa.
