Olympia E. Demeter

Olympia E. Demeter, a longtime area resident and a retired teacher at the Otisville Correctional Facility, died Saturday, October 22, 2005 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Horton Campus. She was 77 years old.

The daughter of the late Frank and Olympia Melilla Case, Olympia was born on February 6, 1928 in Brooklyn, N.Y.

She resided on and off in Bloomingburg since the 1930's and in 1969 made the permanent move to the area. In 1982, she began teaching basic communicational skills and later on, computers at the Federal Correctional Institution in Otisville, where she remained until her retirement in 1997.

Olympia was also extremely active in the Town of Wallkill Democratic Club for many years, and was the winner of the Times Herald Record Cook Off three times, even appearing on the cover of the paper for one of her wins.

A family statement reads: "She could get anybody nominated in her involvement with the democratic club. She was a very accomplished woman, especially at work. She loved her family and her husband, was loved dearly and will be sorely missed."

Olympia is survived by one son, Richard Demeter ad his wife, Diane, of Bellville, N.J.; one daughter, Barbara Alessandrello and her husband, Tano, of Orlando, Fla.; one brother, Anthony Case and his wife, Mena, of Las Vegas, Nev.; and four grandchildren: Olivia, Daria, Chloe, and Nicole.

She was predeceased by her husband, Richard, in 1990; and one sister, Lena Silano in 2000.

Family and friends may visit on Tuesday, October 25, 2005 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Ave., Middletown, N.Y., where a Funeral Service of Remembrance will be held on Wednesday, October 26 at 11 a.m.

Burial will follow at the family plot in Bloomingburg Cemetery, Bloomingburg, N.Y.
